October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. You probably weren't aware of that since it shares October with Breast Cancer Awareness and Emotional Wellness Month, but it's very important for businesses to be aware of what hackers are capable of in today's cyber world. Most small to medium businesses don't have the capability or budget to add more IT resources to handle cybersecurity, but it's important that every business understands what could happen if personal information is obtained through a criminal breach. Recently, the PA Supreme Court ruled that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) should be responsible for the data security of their employees and concluded that employers should take "reasonable security measures to protect its workers’ data". At JLG, we are monitoring this case and others like it as courts continue to look at what damages are owed to individuals caught in data breaches. Oversharing on Social Media

We all know our friends and family who tend to overshare on social media platforms, but when it comes to health organizations and businesses, that's a big NO-NO. Patient or customer personal health information should never be shared on social media, regardless of the situation. The Office of Civil Rights recently investigated a dental practice who violated a patient's privacy on Yelp and found them guilty of disclosing PHI of multiple patients. Learn More >>>

Healthcare Fraud Update

Millions of dollars billed to federal health insurance programs have been found fraudulent. Healthcare fraud continues to be a problem across the nation but this case is "one of the largest health care frauds ever uncovered in the United States". A South Carolina company, owned by Mark Allen, has been named as part of the healthcare scheme to pay and receive healthcare kickbacks totaling more than $2.1 billion. Healthcare fraud has serious consequences.
