Making a difference

Dr. Christine Darden – Monroe’s Hero
Union County Dems hit the pavement to collect signatures for the NAACP petition to rename the new Monroe Science Center after a home-town hero, Dr. Christine Mann Darden. Dr. Darden grew up in Monroe and was raised in the era of gender discrimination and Jim Crow laws. She beat the odds and became a distinguished Engineer at NASA, with space-breaking research resulting in a revolution of aerodynamics design to produce low sonic boom effects. In 2019 Dr. Darden has been bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements. She was featured in the book, Hidden Figures. We are thrilled to report that the City Council of Monroe has unanimously voted in favor of this name change!
