In the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), Palestinian women with breast cancer face many challenges accessing the medical care they need. In Gaza, for example, dwindling medical supplies – including chemotherapy drugs – and restrictions on the exit of patients to specialised hospitals in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, detrimentally affect the treatment available to Palestinian women impacted by the disease.
Radiotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. This kind of treatment is not available in Gaza and so patients must apply to Israel for a permit to access the service in East Jerusalem. One third of these permits are denied or delayed, which risks interrupting or delaying care.
At MAP, working with our local partners, we have created a network of oncologists and other breast cancer specialists, helping to build capacity within Palestinian breast cancer services. With the help of people like you, we are able to support lifesaving treatment and follow-up care for Palestinian women living with breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Palestinian women, comprising 29% of all cancer diagnoses for women in the West Bank and 20% in Gaza. But only 65% of Palestinian women survive more than five years after diagnosis of breast cancer, compared to 85% of women in the UK and almost 90% of women in neighbouring Israel. This is why we need your support to bring expertise, medicines, equipment and lifesaving treatment to Palestinian women and help address this injustice.
Your support today can help us provide essential medicines and disposables to Palestinian hospitals. Latest figures show that 44% of oncology (cancer) drugs are at zero stock in Gaza – meaning there is less than one month's supply left, or they have already run out completely.
Your donation could, for example, help to buy for urgently needed chemotherapy drugs, such as fluorouracil and oxaliplatin, used to treat patients with breast and other cancers.
If you can, please consider making a donation today. Together, we can continue to make a real difference to the lives of Palestinian women living under occupation and as refugees.
