June 2019
Issue 1

Welcome to the Commons

Welcome to the first newsletter of the Commons Social Change Library. We collect, curate and distribute the key lessons and resources of progressive movements around Australia and across the globe.

Each month we'll let you know about some of the new resources in the library. There's much, much more on commonslibrary.org - have a browse of the Topics for inspiration.

See you at Progress 2019!

If you're heading to the Progress conference (20-21 June, Melbourne) come and meet the Commons librarians, Holly Hammond and Antje Dun, during Friday lunchtime. We'll show you around the website, share some of our favourite books, and gather your input for making the most useful library possible.

Check out the Progress 2019 program - it's not too late to register!

Climate Resistance Handbook

A brand new resource to support people new to climate action, including student strikers. Written by Daniel Hunter from 350 and featuring an introduction from Greta Thunberg.

The handbook includes accessible introductions to movements, campaigns, tactics, and techniques for growing action groups.

If you’re wondering how to build a powerful, strategic movement that can make big wins for climate action, this is your guide.

Post-Election Resources

Getting your head around the new government? The Commons includes the updated contact list of Australian Senators and Members.

If you're interested in influencing those MPs you'll find some useful tips in Friends of the Earth UK's Working with your elected representatives.

If you're keen to explore other paths to social change check out Common's resources on different tactics, organising, nonviolent direct action, coalition building and much more.

Election Recovery Tips

Our most viewed resource to date!

The dust is settling on the election and we hope you are adjusting and recovering well. If you have been busy debriefing volunteers and strategising about where to next you may only just be getting the chance to come down. You might find these tips useful.

The Library that gives away books!

Share this newsletter and encourage your friends to subscribe. During the month of June all new subscribers have a chance to win one of these excellent books:
  • The People Power Manual Campaign Strategy Guide
  • Power in Coalition
  • The Building Power Guide
  • How to Make Trouble and Influence People
All brimming with inspiration and practical tips for social change!

Of course we appreciate those of you who have been with us since our launch so one early subscriber will also receive a book.

Here's the newsletter subscription link so your friends and colleagues can sign up.
The Commons pays respects to the traditional owners of the land in which we operate and wherever the newsletter and site are accessed. We recognise the central importance of struggles for Indigenous self-determination and justice within the broad project of creating a progressive future.
