Just in With Jess

HR Coordinator
Staff training and development are very important to Compass. We are always seeking opportunities to expand the knowledge base of all employees. Currently Compass has been working with Suncoast HR to provide training programs to our Management Team. Suncoast HR have presented practical 2 hour Leadership Workshops to our Centre Team Leaders on a variety of topics from Communication to Recruitment. It has been great to see staff engaged in ongoing training and we value the responsibilities our Team Leaders have within each of the Compass Centres. Thank you Suncoast HR for assisting with our growth in this area.

What are you passionate about?

Kindness - Paying it forward, educating people about
beach safety and helping to train our next generation of
surf life savers. I’m also actively involved with Variety Children’s Charity.

Can you play any instruments?

I dabble in a little guitar and piano from time to time
and I can sing (at least I think I can😊).

What’s your favourite thing to do
when you’re not working?

Anything outdoors - You’ll find me at the beach paddling or surfing, hiking up mountains, or taking my 2 Mini Weiner dogs for a walk. Every few days, I’ll venture out to my veggie garden to see how my latest crop is coming along (or how many strawberries my sneaky sausages have stolen) and about once a month I’ll put on my crazy looking beekeeper suite, and crack our hives to make sure our little worker bees are happy and healthy.

Davina

NDIS Coordinator

Hi Everyone,

Compass will be engaging with all Trainees and representatives to arrange a progress review meeting prior to your NDIS Plan review meeting. After the meeting with Compass we can provide you with a report that you can take to your meeting.

If your NDIS Plan review meeting has been scheduled and we have not yet been in contact with you to arrange a meeting, please call Compass and where possible we will arrange a meeting with you.

Has your NDIS plan already been reviewed and a new plan implemented? If so, can you email Compass with the start and end dates of the new NDIS plan.

The Department of Social Services is seeking your feedback on the review of NDIS Act and new NDIS Participant Service Guarantee.

During the 2019 Federal Election, the Australian Government said they would develop and put into law an NDIS Participant Service Guarantee, (The Guarantee).

The Guarantee will make new rules about how the NDIS should work.  For example, it might say how long it should take to get an NDIS plan and start using it.  The Guarantee will be made into law, which means that the NDIA has to obey the rules in it.  The Guarantee will start on 1 July 2020.

Click on the link below for more information  on how to provide feedback.

Bye for now,
Davina.

Compass Charity Golf Day

It was all hands-on deck for the Compass Charity Golf Day!

Trainees and staff from the Palmwoods Centre helped pack goody bags to be handed out to each player by 92.7 Mix FM.  Rakes and Panes trainees and staff manned the 18th hole and sold raffle tickets to all of the players. Mark Darin and Lisa Curry (filling in for Caroline) from 92.7 Mix FM started the day with an outside broadcast at the Twin Waters Golf Club and Vincenza Coffee kick started our golfers with great coffee. Caroline joined us for lunch to MC and Mitch Lewis interviewed his dad Wally about life growing up in the Lewis house. We were kept entertained for the afternoon, lots of laughs, drinks and great food and as an added bonus we managed to raise over $40,000 for the Compass Institute.   A very big Thank You to all of our supporters and guests and to Cricks Sunshine Coast for sponsoring this event.

Buderim Foundation

One of my favourite jobs is representing Compass and receiving donations from local organisations.  A successful grant application to the Buderim Foundation will see the renovation of the tennis court at Compass Farm come to fruition.  Compass were awarded a cheque for $6049.50 to pay for the sail that will be erected across half of the tennis court to shade our new outdoor eating area.  The remainder of the area will be set up for recreation for the trainees.
Recipients from the Buderim Foundation                                                 Louise O’Keeffe from Sunshine Coast Daily

Nights on Ocean
Compass has been nominated as the Charity Partner for Nights on Ocean Markets which will be held on the first Friday of each month from 5pm – 9pm in Ocean Street, Maroochydore.  Come along to check out the produce and craft items for sale at the Compass stall and taste local offerings from the street food vendors.

Milford Lodge Market Day
We love partnering with little people!!  Milford Lodge Day Care Centre holds an annual Market Day and Compass were the beneficiary of funds raised this year.  Throughout the morning the children and their families played games, bought items with their Milford money and listened and danced to live music.  Compass held a stall selling product from the farm.  A donation of $2500 was gifted to Compass and the kids are coming for a visit to the farm next week to meet the trainees and staff.

Connections Café

Wow, now its October and we’ve already had a short heat wave!  Changing weather means customers at the Café change their mindset about what they want to eat and drink! So, suddenly, its salad & sandwiches that are walking out the door opposed to soup, pies and sausage rolls, keeps us on our toes.

Coffee is still in big demand every day early in the morning, with many customers now bringing their own ‘keep cups’. We continue to provide a lot of coffee to Cricks Nambour customers whom come in early with their complimentary coffee vouchers from the service department. This concept introduced when we first opened works well providing a place for people to wait whilst their vehicle is serviced, a free cup of coffee from Crick’s and the opportunity to purchase breakfast or morning tea. Making coffee is a skill with customers asking for so many variations on how they want it prepared and different milks. Our trainees can assist with the process of coffee making and many of them able to prepare various styles at a high standard. They can practice their skills when not under the pressure of multiple orders at the same time and customers in a hurry!

A month would not go by with out a birthday celebration and this month its trainee Dennis Oliver celebrating his birthday, his workmates from Cricks Nambour along with many Compass trainees from the Café and the Rakes and Panes group were on site to help with a loud rendition of ‘Happy birthday’ and share some cakes.

Caboolture TAFE

Communication skills are shining amongst the Trainees during our Morning Meetings.  The Trainees have been discussing subjects with confidence and clarity, they have been actively listening to each other and asking questions along with showing respect and amiability while interacting together.  We are working on eye contact and patience whilst our peers are speaking and love hearing what everyone has to share.
The last month in Hip Hop has had our Trainees grooving away, enjoying dance fitness and socialising with each other while listening to some awesome tunes. Caboolture TAFE Trainees have been working really hard this term on their dance routine to ‘Shotgun’.  Trainees are becoming more and more confident with the moves as they perform in a group and separately showing off what they have learnt so far.
During our travel training this term we have been rotating our destinations traveling to three different supermarket locations. The Trainees have become efficient at tapping on and off, and recognising the red light signal, signalling when their card needs topping up or when the card has expired. With minimal assistance the trainees have gained the confidence in topping up their own Go-cards and using their ID at the box office to extend their expired card, communicating their needs politely and clearly with the transport officers.

Caboolture River Road

As we near the end of the term we can’t help but reflect over our Space themed months! The trainees have successfully decorated the centre with various space related objects from planets and stars to asteroids and satellites. Some have learnt their planets and are able to recite them with minimal prompting. They also remember that Neil Armstrong was the first to walk on the moon. It has been an exciting adventure reading the books from the library and listening to the trainees as they talk about space!

Many thanks to Donna and Maria who along with the trainees completely redecorated our gardens which where destroyed only a number of months ago! They are looking fresh and inspiring! The trainees love watering them and have worked beautifully to dig holes and plant plants. Keep up the good work everyone.

Gympie

Renovations have begun at the Gympie centre with new concrete placed in the underneath area of the building. This will give us a place to wash cars out of the sun and to continue work on our social enterprise activities of woodwork, recycling and potting plants, with greater comfort.
With the warmer weather heating things up, we are cooling down with a weekly visit at the pool. When the outside play area is free, we make great use of having fun on the slide, getting drenched with the giant bucket and spraying each other (gently!) with the hoses.
