Afterschool Programs to Improve Social-Emotional, Behavioral, and Physical Health in Middle Childhood: A Targeted Review of the Literature
This literature review examines studies of afterschool programs that reported positive outcomes in social-emotional, behavioral, and physical health among children ages 6–12. The authors identify key characteristics of programs that report positive outcomes, such as clearly defined goals and a targeted, age-appropriate curriculum.

Evaluation of a Statewide Initiative to Reduce Expulsion of Young Children
This program evaluation study looks at Arkansas’s BehaviorHelp system, a statewide effort designed to reduce the suspension and expulsion of young children by offering support to early childhood education professionals who face challenging behaviors in the classroom. The analysis discusses implementation of a tiered support service to early childhood education professionals, short-term case outcomes, and risk factors associated with expulsion.

Systemwide Quality Improvement in Early Childhood Education: Evidence from Louisiana
This article uses data from Louisiana’s quality rating and improvement system (QRIS) to examine trends in quality improvements across the state and how those trends vary across different communities and sectors. The authors also discuss the advantages of collecting statewide data for QRIS programs and its importance in documenting successful quality improvement efforts.
Understanding the Cost to Deliver High-Quality Publicly Funded Pre-Kindergarten Programs
This study examines the cost per child of high-quality, publicly funded prekindergarten programs. The study offers a cost model of high-quality programs, discusses funding challenges, and looks at key sources of variation in the cost per child in different programs.
Critical Topic: Physical Infrastructure of Child Care and Early Education Facilities
The facilities in which children receive care vary significantly, often in accordance with a community’s resources. These publications emphasize the importance of children’s physical care and early education environment. They also share best practices for ensuring safe and healthy spaces for children.
