Lena Community Prepares Students for First Grade

toddler sitting on grass reading bookThe Lena School District started this fall with a six-week session of students in their same grades as in March 2020, when the pandemic hit and closed schools. This meant that the kindergarteners in September were already reading - which is not usually how school starts at this level. The kindergarteners from Lena Elementary had used the Lena Public Library for outside reading time. A local resident donated kid-size lawn chairs for the kids to use and the library supplied the books (all sorted at their levels for them to choose from) and the lawn space for the kids to spread out.

The kids loved having some new books to read, time outside, and a break from wearing their masks. The Lena Library enjoyed the time with the kids outside before they made the jump to first grade.
