NFLS Sponsors WLA Annual Conference Keynote Speaker, Nigel Poor

When the Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) was looking for sponsors for its annual conference, Nicolet Federated Library System (NFLS) jumped at the chance to sponsor keynote speaker Nigel Poor.

Nigel is a woman of many talents: visual artist, author, professor, and podcast co-host. In her keynote address at the WLA Annual Conference, Nigel spoke about podcasting as a form of storytelling, the creation and evolution of her podcast, Ear Hustle, and connecting with underserved communities.

NFLS Receives ARPA Grants

We are excited to announce that two American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grants have been awarded to the Nicolet Federated Library System (NFLS):
  • Library Space and Safety Improvement Grant: $200,000
This grant was a collaboration between NFLS, the Outagamie Waupaca Library System, the Manitowoc-Calumet Library System, and the Winnefox Library System. Libraries will purchase items such as modular shelving and furniture that will provide library spaces more flexibility for social distancing and programming during the continuing pandemic.
  • Tribal Library Outreach Program for Community Partnerships: $190,569
This grant, shared between the four tribal public libraries within NFLS and Northern Waters Library Service, will attempt to reduce barriers for tribal members needing assistance in the areas of workforce development, education, healthcare, and social services.

Oconto Falls Community Library Welcomes New Library Director, Amy Peterson

The Oconto Falls Community Library welcomed its new director, Amy Peterson, on December 20, 2021. Of course, in order to welcome Amy to Oconto Falls, we had to say goodbye to longtime Oconto Falls director, Joan Denis. We wish Joan many blessings in her retirement!

Amy was the library director at the Lena Public Library from 2014 - December 2021.

Prior to her role at the Lena library, Amy served for eight years on the Farnsworth Public Library Board as a trustee, taking on roles of Vice President and Secretary; served almost eight years as the president of The Friends of Farnsworth Public Library; and was awarded Best Friend of the Library in 2015.

Please join us in welcoming Amy to her new role in Oconto Falls!

NEWI: A Central Source of CE Information for Library Staff in Northeastern WI

The Northeastern Wisconsin CE Partnership (NEWI) is a continuing education (CE) partnership of library systems located in northeastern Wisconsin.

The NEWI website aims to be a central source of CE info for staff working at libraries in four library systems: Manitowoc‐Calumet Library System (MCLS), Nicolet Federated Library System (NFLS), Outagamie Waupaca Library System (OWLS), and Winnefox Library System (WLS).

Library staff and trustees are encouraged to check the NEWI list of free webinars to find online CE opportunities. Most sessions are 60 minutes long and are provided – at no charge to participants – by associations, agencies, companies, and library systems.

NEWI sends monthly email updates to library directors. Updates are also copied to the NFLS Blog at https://www.nfls.lib.wi.us/blog/category/newi.

Oconto Falls Library Participates in Oconto Falls Main Street Open House

The streets of Oconto Falls were busy on December 2, with people on a scavenger hunt looking for the Gingerbread Man.

Participants visited the Selfie Station, sponsored by the Oconto Falls Community Library, to have their pictures taken.

Library staff also entered a replica of the library into the gingerbread house contest (shown below) to encourage community participation.
