2020 NFLS Grants

Youth Services Support Grants

NFLS is once again providing Youth Services Support grants to member libraries to compensate for their efforts in the area of youth services during 2020.

Each library that received grant funds in 2019 must first complete the 2019 Youth Service Support Grant Evaluation in order to be eligible for funds in 2020.

An email was sent to Youth Services contacts at each library yesterday to get the ball rolling.

What's News this Week

Supporting Child Care Providers & Maximizing Maker Efforts

Tessa Michaelson Schmidt, from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, wrote a post for the Wisconsin Libraries for Everyone blog regarding two distinct national projects with resources to help us and our community: Both projects have recently published the results, and Tessa feels the content is high-quality and valuable. Regardless of the size of your library or scope of service, she hopes you will consider these tools.

Continuing Education

New Customer Service Online Training, via Ryan Dowd

Because we want to provide the best possible service to all people – and some patron interactions require a thoughtful and deliberate approach – you now have anytime access to online training from Ryan Dowd that will give you practical tools you can use every day. Through this training, you will learn how to compassionately manage problems and prevent conflicts with all patrons who enter your library, including those who are experiencing trauma such as mental health issues, homelessness, and substance abuse issues.

The online training is 3½ hours long and is on-demand, so you can watch it little by little or in bigger chunks, whenever works for your schedule. The subscription runs from January - December 2020.

Supervisors & Department Heads: please share this info with your staff. If someone on your staff does not have a work email address, please contact Joy Schwartz with their alternate email address and she’ll send them a personalized invitation.

Continuing Education Funding

We are finalizing the libraries' 2019 balances and 2020 calculations. Please be on the lookout for an upcoming email for more details.

Library Legislative Day: Registration Closes TODAY

Library Legislative Day is February 11, 2020. This is a one-day opportunity and annual event to express our thanks to legislators in person and advocate for their continued support of libraries.

Our collective influence at the capitol is based on your relationships with your legislators, both on Library Legislative Day and year-round in each legislative district.

Once you submit your registration with which representatives you'd like to meet with, our Legislative Day Committee can create your appointment schedule (to be published in late January).

Registration closes TODAY.
