Actions for March 3 - 6
FRIDAY, MARCH 3
GLOBAL DAY FOR YOUTH-LED CLIMATE STRIKES
WHERE: IN NYC, MEET AT FOLEY SQUARE
WHEN: 1 PM
MARCH ROUTE: ACROSS THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE TO BOROUGH HALL
#FridaysForFuture is a youth-led and -organized global climate movement that started in August 2018, when 15-year-old Greta Thunberg began a school strike for climate. Of course, people of all ages are welcome to attend the actions. The details for the NYC strike are listed above. People in other locations can use this map to find their nearest strike.
- As with all in-person events, you don't have to participate in the entire action to contribute. You are welcome to come late, leave early, or just stop by to take photos and amplify the activists on social media.
- IN NEW YORK STATE BUT CAN'T JOIN THE STRIKE? You can help from your home or office! Fridays for Future NYC is asking that New York state legislators support, fund, and pass the Climate, Jobs, and Justice Package created by NY Renews. You can easily contact your local elected officials by texting the word STATE to 50409 and sending them this message.
SATURDAY, MARCH 4
ABORTION-CLINIC DEFENSE - NYC
WHERE: MOTT AND PRINCE STREETS
WHEN: 8 AM ET SHARP
People who need abortions are being threatened everywhere, including NYC. On the first Saturday of every month, anti-abortion Christian extremists meet at Old St. Pat's Basilica in Soho. They get an NYPD escort and walk a couple of blocks to intimidate the patients at the nearby Planned Parenthood clinic. And every month, the activists of NYC for Abortion Rights are there to slow down the march of the Christian extremists, defend the clinic, and shield the patients from the sight of praying Proud Boys.
SUNDAY, MARCH 5
ST. PAT'S FOR ALL - QUEENS, NY
STARTS: 43RD ST. AND SKILLMAN AVE.
ENDS: 58TH ST. AND WOODSIDE AVE
WHEN: STARTS AT NOON
Not to be confused with Old St. Pat's Basilica above, the St. Pat's For All parade started more than 20 years ago in response to LGBTQ+ groups being banned from the city's St. Patrick's Day parade. Of course, this one has turned out to be a lot more fun! It's also a "must" for New York politicians so if you want to birddog a representative or senator, this is a good opportunity to catch them outside.
MONDAY, MARCH 6
CLOSE RIKERS VIGIL - NYC
WHERE: INSIDE THE TIMES SQUARE SUBWAY STATION
WHEN: 5 PM - 6 PM
Join the activists of Rise and Resist at this vigil calling for the immediate shutdown of the inhumane jail complex on Rikers Island. Ninety percent of the people detained at Rikers in filthy, dangerous conditions have not been convicted of a crime -- they're just people who can't afford cash bail. Some spend years at Rikers and are never convicted of a crime -- they've basically served a life-destroying prison sentence without being found guilty of anything. New York is actually required by law to close Rikers by 2027, but Mayor Eric Adams has openly talked about disobeying that law. Considering the unhinged speech he just gave trashing the separation of church and state, Adams is capable of anything. And 2027 is too late anyway -- how many people will die or lose their jobs/housing by then?
- As with all in-person events, you don't have to participate in the entire action to contribute. You are welcome to come late, leave early, or just stop by to take photos and amplify the activists on social media.
- To find the vigil inside the Times Square subway station, walk towards the shuttle train. We'll be the ones with the signs/banners/fliers in the concourse right before you get to the shuttle.
