Actions for Week of February 20
MONDAY, FEB. 20
PHONE BANK FOR WISCONSIN'S PRIMARY - NATIONAL
WHERE: ZOOM
WHEN: 5 PM ET - 7 PM ET
You'll be calling voters ahead of tomorrow's primary to help flip the Wisconsin Supreme Court and create a 4-3 Democratic majority. Organizers from Swing Blue Alliance say this is the single most important election for democracy in America in 2023. They say: "A Democratic WI Supreme Court could roll back the most severe gerrymandering in the US, and could rule that a 1849 law outlawing abortion is unconstitutional. This election could impact the 2024 Presidential election and which party controls the US House of Representatives."
TUESDAY, FEB.21
(1) STOP COP CITY - NYC
WHERE: 200 LIBERTY STREET
WHEN: 8:30 AM - 10 AM
This action is in solidarity with activists who have spent two years fighting to keep Atlanta's environmentally important forest from being razed and replaced with a $90 million police training facility. (Last month, one of the forest defenders was killed by police while others were jailed and denied bail.) This rally is in front of insurance company AXA, calling on it to drop Cop City construction contractor Brasfield & Gorrie as a client.
(2) EXPOSING FOX LIES - NYC
WHERE: 48TH AND 6TH
WHEN: 12 PM - 1 PM
The activists of Truth Tuesdays and Rise and Resist have been protesting Fox's lies every week for more than a year. This week's action will be an exciting one. It will highlight the findings from voting-machine company Dominion's lawsuit against Fox, which showed that Fox hosts knew Trump was lying about election fraud but aired the lies anyway. The organizers provide banners and signs, so you can just bring yourself.
- RSVP on Facebook. As with all in-person events, you don't have to participate in the entire action to contribute. You are welcome to leave early, come late, or just walk by to take photos and amplify the activists on social media.
- DC-AREA ALTERNATIVE: The monthly Fox protest in Bethesda organized by Defenders of Democracy Against Disinformation is NEXT WEEK (Feb. 28) at 4:30 PM at Elm St. and Wisconsin. Put it on your calendar now!
(3) PHONE BANK FOR WISCONSIN'S PRIMARY - NATIONAL
WHERE: ZOOM
WHEN: 11 AM ET - 1 PM ET
Wisconsin's upcoming Supreme Court election will have national implications -- including in 2024's presidential election -- so Upper West Side Action Group has partnered with the Wisconsin Democrats to make phone calls to voters to encourage them to vote in today's primary. You'll be provided with training, a phone script, and voter names. You can participate no matter where you live as long as you have a computer and phone.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 22
DONATE TO EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS - NATIONAL
This Google doc lists donation options for recovery/rescue/support efforts in Syria and Turkey. Scroll down in the document to see previous links for donation information for other causes. I don't regularly update those, so do your research to make sure you know what's going on. For instance, the water crisis in Jackson, Miss., is ongoing, but $100,000 of earlier donations has yet to be be spent. If you live in Mississippi or know someone who does, I suggest making calls to city and state officials requesting action, rather than donating more money.
THURSDAY, FEB. 23
IMMIGRANTS ARE WELCOME HERE - NYC
WHERE: GRAND CENTRAL (NEAR THE INFO BOOTH)
WHEN: 5 PM - 6 PM
It is legal to seek asylum in the U.S. and you MUST be in the U.S. to do so. You can't apply from another country. Join Rise and Resist's silent vigil to say that immigrants are welcome here.
FRIDAY, FEB. 24
(1) INSURE OUR FUTURE, NOT EACOP! - NYC
WHERE: AIG INSURANCE HQ, 1271 6TH AVE. (50TH & 51ST)
WHEN: 12 PM - 1 PM
The East African Crude Oil Pipeline threatens human rights, water resources, and our climate. Activists are calling on AIG, a massive insurer of oil and gas expansion, to rule out support for EACOP. As with all in-person events, you don't have to participate in the entire action to contribute. You are welcome to leave early, come late, or just walk by to take photos and amplify the activists on social media.
(2) END POLICE VIOLENCE - NATIONAL
No matter where you live, there are easy actions you can take (calls to make, emails to send) to demand an end to police violence. This Google doc has options for NYC, Atlanta, Memphis, and beyond.
SUNDAY, FEB. 26
PHONE BANK FOR WISCONSIN SUPREME COURT - NATIONAL
WHERE: ZOOM
WHEN: 6 PM ET (3 PM PT) - 8 PM ET (5 PM PT)
Join a phone bank to call voters about a crucial Wisconsin Supreme Court election in April. This election will determine whether conservatives or liberals hold a majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court for the 2024 presidential election, in a state that Biden won by only 0.5% in 2020. This election will also determine whether Wisconsin women still have a right to choose to have an abortion.
