NOTES FROM THE DEAN
Throughout the last two months ghosts have visited me in the form of calendar entries from the semester that might have been. Today it was the ghost of the Graduate Thesis Show opening reception, already shifted from the usual venue of the RI Convention Center to WaterFire Arts Center, thanks to the ingenuity and determination of our fabulous Campus Exhibitions team working closely with Graduate Studies and our Graduate Program Directors. So we won't be trying out a new physical space this evening, but we can still all raise a toast wherever we are to the amazing achievements of all graduating RISD students as they race to the virtual finishing line. Many, many congratulations! From the teams at Fleet Library and the Libraries Division, we wish you the very best in all future endeavors, IRL and otherwise!

To the whole RISD Community, we're winding down this historic semester. While you will hear from us less often, please know that we are working hard to ensure that you have access to the staff and materials you need. We will communicate from time to time this summer with updates on progress, and we hope you will be in touch with us to let us know what we can do to help you.

In the meantime, read on for links to Graduate Thesis Shows of the past; ways to return Fleet books and materials; our nifty and newly uploaded Victorian trade card collection; and a reminder that Unbound 2020 is still open 24/7. Being online sometimes has its advantages.

With warmest regards from the virtual stacks,
Margot McIlwain Nishimura
Dean of Libraries

PAST GRADUATE THESIS SHOWS ONLINE
Take a deep dive into the archives of Graduate Thesis Exhibitions, from 2007 through 2018, on Digital Commons. Each year – until this one – RISD stages the Grad Thesis Show, a massive public exhibition of work by students about to earn their RISD Master's degrees, divided into "mini galleries" by discipline. While we can't come together this year to celebrate each student's unique achievements at RISD, the past exhibitions remind us of the remarkable innovation and creativity embodied by the work exhibited in RISD's Graduate Thesis Shows.

HOW TO RETURN YOUR BOOKS AND OTHER MATERIALS
We recognize that returning library materials may be difficult. Please don't worry. Here's what you need to know about returning Fleet Library and interlibrary loan (ILL) materials.

ILL materials are due June 1, unless the slip attached to the book states a later date. Questions? risdlib@risd.edu
Returning students and faculty have until October 11 to return Fleet books and materials to us.
Graduating students have until October 11 to return Fleet books and materials to us.

Ways to return materials:
  1. Book drop: If you are currently in the Providence area, you can use the book drop just inside the front doors of 15 Westminster Street (by Public Safety) anytime.
  2. Mailing: Pack the items and use low cost USPS Media Mail to ship to: Fleet Library/RISD, 2 College Street, Providence, RI 02903 (email us the items you've shipped plus the tracking number). If a prepaid shipping label is helpful, please complete this form, and we will facilitate the process.
  3. If neither option works, or you have further questions, please get in touch with us by writing to risdlib@risd.edu
POSTCARDS FROM THE PAST
Fleet's Visual + Material Resource Center team has been remotely scanning and cataloging a very cool collection of Victorian trade cards, a segment of which was just published as an Artstor Public Collection:

This segment contains some fun advertisements for 19th-century Rhode Island manufacturers, some in downtown Providence, even on Westminster Street!

CELEBRATE UNBOUND
Find yourself something special at RISD Unbound 2020 online, a celebration of artists' books, zines and experimental printed matter created by the RISD community and local artists, as well as designers, publishers, artists and enthusiasts from across the region. The Exhibitors page features work and links to all of the participating artists and designers, many of whom have works and editions for sale. Please support them if you can, and spread the word: #unbound2020

Also, find artwork and inspiration in UNBOUND: art book fair archive on Digital Commons.
