Message from Cara Dessert, The Center’s CEO

We want your opinion!

With our successful leadership transition and recent growth, we’ve begun a pivotal strategic planning process to help us set a course for our future. A key to success in this process is learning the opinions of our clients, supporters, and friends. Whether you have volunteered, donated, attended events or received support services at The Center, we wholeheartedly value your vision and commitment to the work of Our Center and your ideas for the future of our beloved Center community. We invite you to take this online survey to share your thoughts:

English: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WPBVTLR
En español: https://es.surveymonkey.com/r/WH8T6FL

All comments shared in the survey will be kept confidential. Our consultants will not attribute names to the data they collect, as the data will ultimately be presented to The Center in the form of aggregate findings and recommendations. Data collected from this survey will be combined with data from community focus groups and individual interviews to give The Center broad community input. Thank you for your participation!

In The Know With Ian

The month of June has officially closed with an abundance of events that provided an experience and opportunity to fundraise for our diverse community. Hundreds of LGBTQ youth from Southern California showed up for the Rainbow Prom, a safe an affirming space for young people. MARYAH (Metro Area Real Estate Professionals for Young Adult Housing) hosted their first event of the year, Summer Solstice on the rooftop of Little Italy's Porto Vista Hotel. What an evening! Look for their Harvest Howl event in October.
Crowds danced to the sounds of the Manny Cepeda Orchestra at the Pachanga de Frida, an annual fundraiser for the Nicole M Ramirez Latin@ Services at The Center. This past weekend the month officially closed with a graduation at the Young Professionals Council Academy Brunch. A very big thank you to the volunteers, supporters, sponsors, and attendees for the support of each one of these special events. By attending and supporting Center events, #CenterSupporters allow us to continue providing life-saving services daily.

We closed the month, and we closed our fiscal year. It was an exciting fiscal year that launched the beginning of new programs. Programs that I know we're excited to share with you in the coming months. Thank you for your continued support all year long.

Saturday, September 28, 30th Annual AIDS Walk & Run San Diego

In its 30th year, AIDS Walk & Run San Diego remains the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in San Diego County. Funds raised for AIDS Walk & Run San Diego will support 14 local HIV service organizations and The Center’s HIV services and programs. There are currently more than 18,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in San Diego County. Your participation inspires those living with HIV and honors those we’ve lost to the disease. This event also raises HIV awareness while reducing the stigma -- and that is more important than ever to our fight to end HIV. Registration is now open at www.aidswalksd.org!

Center Program Spotlight

South Bay Youth Center

The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s South Bay Youth Center (SBYC) in Chula Vista will provide similar programming to The Center’s Hillcrest Youth Center, offering a drop-in and recreational center for LGBTQ and non-binary youth, youth living with HIV, and their families and allies.

Established in 2019 to meet the increased demand for services for LGBTQ+ youth and families and to increase access to vital support and programs, the SBYC will offer gender identity groups, arts programs, social activities, tutoring and discussion groups. A therapist will also be available on site.

The South Bay Youth Center will be open three days a week from 3-7pm – on Wednesdays for youth ages 18-24, on Thursdays for 14-18-year-olds and Fridays for those ages 10-13. In addition, the Youth Center will be open on Monday evenings for Mi Familia, a support group for parents of LGBTQ youth.

For more information about the South Bay Youth Center, please contact Victor Esquivel, Director of Youth Services, at southbayyouth@thecentersd.org or at 619.692.2077 x207.

Community Events

Monday, July 22, 5:30-8pm, Transgender & Nonbinary Identities: A Community Training
The transgender community is incredibly diverse. Some transgender people identify as male or female, & some identify as nonbinary, genderqueer, agender, or somewhere else outside the gender binary. This training will leave you with a greater level of understanding of transgender & nonbinary identities, as well as offer better competency with using gender-neutral pronouns.

The San Diego LGBT Community Center's Training Institute Presents a Free Community Training & Panel on Monday, July 22. A free dinner will be served @ 5:30pm. The training and panel will be from 6-8pm. RSVP at the Facebook event.

The Center is wheelchair accessible. For additional accessibility requests or more information, please contact Sarah Merk-Benitez at 619.692.2077 x214 or smerkbenitez@thecentersd.org. A 72-hour advance notice for ASL interpreters is greatly appreciated.

Family Health Centers of San Diego Transgender Health Services at The Night Clinic
The Night Clinic (TNC) hosts a dedicated night for our transgender patients every Wednesday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Trans-informed medical providers and staff create an inclusive environment for all,  with convenient evening hours, a central location and free or low-cost services.
