It's sheer luck alone that we have today - these two moderately priced labels from two of the most famous Spanish winemakers alive. Both Ricardo Perez Palacios, assisted by esteemed uncle Alvear and Peter Sisseck are renowned for their spectacular wines.

Both the wines shown today have emerged from the shadows behind their elder siblings and have firmly established themselves as market-makers in their own right. Both from the Castilla y Leon region, this is where the similarities diverge so you will find more detail below on each of the two wines...

The Wines:

This 100% Mencia from the Bierzo district of Castilla y Leon has fast become recognised as one of the very best price to value propositions in Spain. The first major hockeystick on the recognition stakes was when Robert Parker awarded the 2011 release of this wine  - Best Value Spanish Wine of the Year.

Then came the 100 point score for his "La Faraona" 2014 and the rest, as they say - is history...

Grown on 50 to 90 year old vines on what is best described as slate and very little else, this wine has become the ultimate expression of Mencia from Castila y Leon.

Look for a certain crunchiness of texture, intensely perfumed phenolics that flow around a theme of violets, raspberry and cedar. Relish the juxtaposition between power and grace that is a rarity - especially when experiencing an almost 100% Mencia at this price point.

There is a serious risk of you never buying a more expensive bottle from this region again...

Dominio de Pingus "PSI" 2019 (JS 94) - Limited

The history surrounding this label is a noble one. Off the back of stratospheric success with Pingus, Peter set about developing an initiative that supports local growers in Ribera del Duero in their quest to save ancient vines that are in danger of being lost to time.

This wine is the result of meticulous research and study of the remaining bush vines particularly around La Horra, and selecting the very best for this bottling.

This 100% Tempranillo wine is not only the result of brilliant winemaking from Sisseck, but an example of what happens when people get together and save a vitally important part of viticultural history.
