A Message From Interfaith Food Ministry
For the last three months Interfaith Food Ministry has ramped up all efforts to keep our clients and volunteers safe during covid-19, while providing fresh and healthy food every week as it has for the last 33 years! Indeed, 3 food distribution days per week has been our normal schedule for many years now and will continue to be as long as there is need in our county.  We realize that life is full of challenges and unexpected hardships. However, keeping food on the table should never be one of them. We pledge to keep our community healthy and hunger-free!

Thanks so much to The Union for the great articles mentioning IFM this month: Check us out!

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS!
BIG THANKS TO MARC CUNIBERTI!

We'd like to give Marc Cuniberti a huge thanks for holding two match fundraisers for IFM Covid-19 Relief! Also, thank you to the community who responded to Marc's Match, totaling over $15,000!

On behalf of the 8000+ WesternNevada County residents we provide food for and our 450 volunteers, we are very grateful for your contribution to our community's well being during this challenging time, Marc!  We find it remarkable that a member of the community has stepped up in such a gracious way to share what we do and inspire others to contribute!

If you have a wide network through work or family and friends and think you would be able to hold a fundraiser for IFM, it's very fun and easy to do through Facebook or your email contact list.  Reach our development director, Naomi Cabral at naomidd.ifm@gmail.com to find out how you can make a huge difference in your community by sharing IFM's cause.

THANK YOU TWIN CITIES CHURCH!
We'd like to give a big heartfelt thanks to Twin Cities Church's awesome volunteers, and Pastor John Fairchild for holding their fantastic two day food drive last week end for IFM.  The drive-thru was in their parking lot and made it easy for supporters, most of whom were generous TCC congregants, to come and quickly drop off food.  By the end of the two mornings we had 100+ boxes filled with food and $575 in donations!  Our IFM drivers packed the food into the truck and delivered it back to IFM, making it a very successful weekend for every one. This couldn't come at a better time. Thank you, Twin Cities Church!

Hey runners, walkers, and community-interested people,  join TCC for their 5K “VIRTUAL Run for the Community”and Gold Country Grand Prix “race!” Find out more about it here.
THANK YOU ALBERTSON'S FOUNDATION!
This month Albertson's Companies Foundation awarded IFM with at grant for $10,000!  Thanks so much ACF! The Nourishing Neighbors grant will be used toward our senior bag and high school pantry programs.

Enduring Hardships

Life has gotten exponentially harder for many in the last few years.  For "Sandra", it's been touch and go since she lost her home and all her belongings in the Paradise fire less than 2 years ago [Name has been changed].  She took refuge on a friends couch in Grass Valley, looking to start over, and was able to find a part time job as a receptionist making minimum wage, as she put the pieces together in the rebuilding of her life.

Last summer Sandra was finally able to move out into her own apartment.  "Just when things were starting to feel a little more stable, the energy was shut off for days and days and I ended up losing a lot of work and falling behind on my bills.  I found IFM and was able to save money that way," said Sandra.  "I've normally been really self sufficient, but with Covid-19 and losing more hours, I find myself coming to IFM on a regular basis in order to keep up.  I am just so grateful for the help.  It's a scary world out there. But this county is just so caring and despite all the hardships,  I haven't given up hope."

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
WITH THE IFM DRIVING CREW

IFM's May volunteer spotlight goes to IFM's Driving Crew;  Steve Temple, Jim Ellisor, Jack Bacon, and Frank Bordieri.

This excellent team of volunteer drivers make 3-4 trips each week, two trips down to Roseville and back, early in the morning, then another 1-2 trips locally.  The job is far from easy!  It involves unloading and moving pallets of food and also reloading back on to the truck and reloading the empty boxes upon return.

Combined, these great guys have all worked 15+ years as IFM volunteers!  Jim handles the scheduling and keeps everyone organized.  Jack coordinates with the mechanic for truck maintenance as needed and provides comic relief.  Frank, is always ready to lend an extra hand (even when he is not scheduled) and is kind enough to laugh at Jack’s jokes. Steve continues to be scheduled for one week a month, despite being right in the middle of moving to Napa.  IFM and Phil would like to thank this great team for getting their work done professionally and safely, while also having a great time.

IFM LAUNCHES MEAL KITS IN FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS WITH HEALTHY RECIPES

IFM is now launching the first in a series of recipes + simple meal kits, featuring some of the items provided at our food distributions.  This month was the first time we gave out the take home recipe with our regular distribution.  IFM provided the celery, cilantro, diced canned tomatoes, red onion, and beans. The recipe was crafted by Wendy Van Wagner, our resident nutritionist with the help of the Hunger to Health Committee.

The series will run for a two-week period to make sure all clients have a chance to try out a new recipe! Our goal is to broaden the nutritional horizons of our clients by giving them the tools to cook easy healthy meals at home. Because we know that happy tummies + healthy eating= reduced food insecurity and better health.
