Want to try nocturnal atlasing?
The second survey period for nightjars starts tonight!
Eastern Whip-poor-will by Tristan Herwoood/Macaulay Library
Nighthawks, Whip-poor-wills, and Chuck-wills-widows are easiest to find in the week before and after a full moon. The optimal survey window in June runs from June 7-20.

If you suspect any nightjars breed near you,
consider conducting a survey on a moonlit night. If there are no existing routes near you, you can create your own route.

Even if you missed the May window, you can still go out this month!

Easy steps to participate
  1. Select a route
  2. Review the 2022 Handbook
  3. Watch the training video
  4. Conduct the survey!
  5. Submit your data
Your efforts will help us monitor population changes in these rapidly declining species.
