In 1860, Abraham Lincoln wrote in a letter to Zachariah Chandler, Michigan's U.S. Senator, that he remembered meeting him four years earlier in Kalamazoo when the two had taken tea together. New research by the Kalamazoo Abraham Lincoln Institute has discovered the identity of Lincoln's Kalamazoo tea hostess. This discovery was recently published in The Michigan Historical Review.
We will publically announce our findings on Lincoln's birthday, Feb. 12, 2022.
Lincoln's letter was written in response to an invitation he had received from Senator Chandler inviting him and Mrs. Lincoln to join Chandler in Detroit, at the Michigan State Fair. Lincoln wrote Chandler declining the invitation, but recalling the two had previously met in Kalamazoo.
