The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

~ Rumi

So Long September,

I was not sure this newsletter was going to make it out this month, as the last few weeks have been very challenging. And I wanted to share with you some insights that came to me during it all. I realized that even though I believed that I was managing the current climate fairly well, underneath there was a sensation building that I termed “anxiousness”. I attributed this feeling to factors outside if my control; the major decision our neighbours to the south have to make shortly in this coming election and it’s impacts on our country and international relations; the racial tension that is escalating in the United States and the rippling affects that are being felt all over the world; and this second wave and what that means for the health of my family and friends.

At my recent soul coach session with my meditation teacher the subject of my “anxiousness” arose and I shared it with her. As she guided me through our session she asked me to sit with the sensation and describe it. Where it was noticeable in my body, characteristics, etc. As I became more familiar with the sensation I began to see it more clearly and realized that this sensation was just that a sensation, neither good nor bad. Same as the sensation of cold that says put a jacket on or heat, signalling the need to remove layers. I was reminded that our emotions, felt as sensations in the body is nothing more than energy that is moving through. It needs no justification and only has as much control over us as we allow. We attach the value to them.

Rumi’s poem The Guest House is one of my favourites which eloquently describes our relationship with our emotions. Continue reading for some of my offerings that might help you process your own emotions and do not hesitate to reach out if you would like to know more about Soul Coaching.

MIDWEEK RESET

I hope you read the beginning of my newsletter because if you did, you will already have two good reason why you should try my Midweek Reset. First, you will have an idea of how I use meditation and soul coaching to connect more deeply with my emotions, and therefore my thoughts and actions. Secondly, even  mindfulness teachers have teachers to help guide and provide an impartial mirror for reflection.

I have been rethinking how I would like to provide this offering, so that it reflects what I believe would be most helpful and accessible for everyone who wishes to participate. There will be a suggested cost per session. Anyone who identifies as Black, Indigenous or People of Colour will receive 50% off. In addition if there is anyone who is in need of meditation but financially cannot afford the fee, let me know so I can explain how you can receive this offering as a Soul’s Gift from me to you. My goal is to create a space where everyone feels seen and valued and for those who have been under served in the mindfulness community to know your presence is needed.

Each month I will list the Thursdays on which a session will be held. As we build community my goal is to hold a session weekly. The session dates for the month of October are:

Thursday October 8th, 8:00 - 830 pm
Thursday October 15th, 8:00 - 8:30 pm
Thursday October 29th, 8:00 - 8:30 pm

BOOK CLUB UPDATE
We are just about half way through our Fall book club read, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson, and it has been an incredibly eye opening and thought provoking read so far. I thought I knew of America’s history with racism, however I was not aware of how calculated and the lengths it’s society went to to maintain their social hierarchy. It is also very sobering to know even the Nazis found the American racial laws extreme.

Remember to be mindful with your reading. Take breaks, go for walks or read something lighter in between. The material can be heavy and daunting. Unlearning and relearning is challenging and occurs over time. Borrowing from the great Nippsey Hussle,  “it’s a marathon not a race.” If you haven’t been reading a long with us and would like to join in, there is still time. This book is a thirteen hour read and even if you don’t finish, know that your energy and voice is always welcome in our discussion, Sunday October 18, 2020, 7:30 pm on Zoom.
