Don't miss the Big Meet-Up next Tuesday 21 July -- we're talking REBELLION! 6:30pm

Why now, when many scientists expect a second wave in the pandemic? Because the government's own Climate Change Committee predicts an increase in the atmosphere's temperature between 2 and 4 degrees if radical action is not taken NOW to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Other scientists predict the rise will be far worse. The implications are massive suffering, including societal breakdown, especially in the global south.

Rishi Sumak's announcement of £3bn for home and workplace insulation falls short of a green recovery. Billions are being poured into loans for the big carbon emitters. We must put pressure on government and businesses now -- they must not miss this opportunity to invest in green industries and jobs.

What, and when? From 28 to 31 August, XR around the UK will signal, locally and regionally, that we're back! On 1 September, we'll take the Rebellion to London, Cardiff and other cities to dramatically increase the pressure on our governments to take decisive action on the climate emergency.

28 August: on the first day of the bank holiday, across the country, banner drops to show to thousands that we're back. For Totnes and Area, the obvious locations will be road bridges, especially across the bank-holiday-busy A38 -- there will be other high-visibility places too. We have clear guidance on how to make this safe. It's non-arrestable.

29 August: around the country, a focus on airports and aviation. If they're not conveniently located, other high-emitting targets are available. Actions could be arrestable or non-arrestable.

30 August will be a day of regeneration, training, peoples' assemblies, and taking a breather before the big-city uprisings starting on 1 September.

31 August is for targeting banks. Although it's bank holiday, high streets will be busy with shoppers. The idea is to have high visibility theatrical actions at the banks, calling for disinvestment and no going back to business as usual. Local groups decide how disruptive they want to be.

1 September: on to the cities -- London, Cardiff, Belfast and probably a northern city such as Manchester -- still to be decided. There will be a mix of actions -- large-scale disruption organised by XR UK and XR Regional planners working together, combined with smaller actions staged by local groups and affinity groups. Lots of scope for imaginative mischief! Again, a mix of arrestable and non-arrestable options.

Covid matters: participation is a personal choice based on each rebel's assessment of risk to self and others. The prevalence and trends of infection in late August will be an important factor. Many feel the climate crisis is overriding; rebels who are more vulnerable or who have vulnerable contacts may be more cautious. Many roles in the rebellion don't involve mass gatherings.

Our meeting on 21st will be a call to action, a re-awakening, a re-invigoration. It's also an opportunity to carefully consider our feelings about the rebellion as the plans develop. Our break-out groups will systematically draw out our first gut reactions, what we see as positive and possible, what we see as problematic or challenging, and ideas for overcoming those challenges. Thinking from this meeting will be fed back to planners and will input to our big meet-ups over the next few weeks. Join us -- your inputs are essential!

Zoom Big Meetup info

Virtual attendance at big meet-ups in Grove school (whenever they recommence)

The Hosting Circle are aware that some people would prefer to continue to join meetings via Zoom, rather than attend in person.  Our tech team is working on this and plan to trial it at the first big meet-up so as to ensure we include as many rebels as possible.  For more info, email
Zoom Security for Big Meet Ups

We briefly had some uninvited and disruptive guests at a recent big meet up. To minimise the chances that this could happen again, we've changed the settings on our XR zoom account to ensure maximum security and also have a dedicated tech person for the meet ups - huge thanks to Barry!
With a rebellion coming soon, we're moving to weekly, possibly shorter, big meet ups and aiming to have some of them on Mondays - we'll keep you posted in the newsletter, on Mattermost TAA general channel and via our Telegram broadcast channel.
We're aiming to have a meet up about the 4th Demand on either 28th July or 4th August, depending on when we get the materials from XR Justice.  Please keep both dates free - there'll be an interim newsletter with more information if it's going to be on 28th July.

The Totnes & Area Regen butterfly emerges!
Following an interactive session at the last big meet up, a word cloud of emerging regen themes was created by all who participated during the meeting as well as from emails sent in beforehand.

July 7th’s big meet-up focused on the theme of Regenerative culture, facilitated by the small core group of Totnes & Area Regen.
“We need a regenerative culture” - what does this XR principle mean to us?

The two questions were
1. What does regen mean to you?
2. How would you know you were experiencing a regenerative culture? What are you hearing, seeing, sending, tasting, touching?

The words in the largest and strongest text/font in the image above are those that were repeated many times in the feedback, giving an initial insight into our emerging common ground on regen while also inviting in and holding all views as a rich resource to shape our culture in diversity and inclusivity. This is the beginning of an ongoing exploration into what regen means to individuals and anyone who was not at the meeting is invited to continue to email their responses to the two questions above to please put ‘butterfly’ in the subject line.
We will periodically update the word cloud and share, all views welcome, whether you love regen
or whether the word makes your toes curl! With thanks to the hosting team for their wonderful
support of the big meet.

Central XR statement on Regen
“At XR we are actively working towards regenerative cultures that are healthy, resilient and
adaptable. There is no singular definition of what regenerative cultures are, but they provide a
framework that allows each of us to develop our own approach to practicing a regenerative way of
being. Regenerative cultures focus on self, interpersonal, community, and earth care. We care for
the planet and all life in the awareness that this is the most effective way to create a thriving
community for all of humanity.”

Rebel wellbeing services relaunch
Many rebels have benefitted from the generosity of those offering their time and skills to support
wellbeing during and beyond actions in a gift economy scale from free to donations. We have
created a short simple form which magically and securely logs all offers and we invite anyone who
has something they would like to offer to click here for more information and the form:
The form takes 10-15 mins to complete and automatically arrives with us when you click submit.
With more actions planned we are likely to experience an increase in rebel wellbeing needs.

Three need to multiply to expand the Regen team!
We are just three people in the core working group and in need of more committed help. A range of
opportunities can be matched to your time availability, skills, experience and interests, including
areas where you’re keen to try something new and develop additional skills. We keep meetings
focussed and time aware. More information here on our purpose and current work including an
easy link to email us:
You’re welcome to email us with any questions without obligation to join us.

Extinction Rebellion reveals plans for their next UK Rebellion – beginning on 1st September – when the UK Parliament is due to sit again. We will peacefully blockade the area around the Houses of Parliament until the Government agrees that the first thing they’ll do is debate our 3 demands.

It’s 2020. Siberia is burning. Extinction is beckoning - but the Government is looking the other way. Peaceful rebellion is the only option we have before us.

Communications news
We'll be using the Mattermost Big Blue button for big meet ups instead of zoom soon!  Try it out for your WG and AG meet ups.

We're streamlining our communication channels
  • to get information to you more quickly,
  • to reduce how many different channels we each need to follow,
  • to reduce costs,
  • to use a platform which is run on renewable energy,
  • to improve security: data on our new services is held encrypted on a server in Switzerland (which has excellent data protection laws). Should we receive a data access request, shutting down the server would make the disk useless to the authorities.  So anything shared on a Private Channel will be secure.  Similarly, meetings held using Mattermost's Big Blue Button will be more secure than Zoom (& are free). This document explains further, including why we should move away from Google, Whats App, Facebook, etc.
UK Comms Hub and Mattermost Overview
The new XR comms systems comprise:
  • Mattermost chat, for short lived conversations and eventually for virtual meetings. One place to reach all rebels. (Mattermost can be used instead of WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and Zoom)
  • UK Forums (also called Discourse), for longer, more in-depth discussions
  • UK Cloud, for file storage
  • The XR UK Communications Hub, which is a simple landing page that provides links to the above three areas.
You may soon receive an invitation to join the UK Comms Hub, or you can request one at
For help, email Jonathan ( for more techie issues, or Barry ( for simpler stuff.

If you're not planning to be on the new platforms but you want to receive information, please contact your AG or WG coordinator so they can make sure you're in the communication loop.  If you're not in a WG or AG, you can contact Helen ( to arrange a chat about how to make sure you get the information you want.

UK Comms Hub and Mattermost Training
Ned Evans is offering Zoom sessions providing an overview of the UK Comms Hub for all levels of technical ability. These are now on: If everyone can encourage 2 or 3 people they know to ask for an invite onto the hub ... and they encourage 2 or 3 more people ... we'll all be on there in no time!  You might also want to attend one of Ned's trainings with your AG or WG - contact Barry with all of your emails and he can invite you to the hub and create a channel and forum for your group ahead of the training

HEADING FOR EXTINCTION - and what to do about it

An online talk and discussion evening offered by our Totnes and Area Talks Team

This is an opportunity FOR YOU to invite people you know, who are concerned about the climate and environment, to learn more about what’s really happening, what can be done, and about Extinction Rebellion.

The talk is targeted at people new to XR, but everyone is welcome.

The planet is in ecological crisis: we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction event this planet has experienced. Scientists believe we may have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown. This is an emergency.

Speakers from Extinction Rebellion will share the latest climate science on where our planet is heading, discuss some of the psychology around climate change and the contribution that social movements can make to accelerate positive change.

There will be time to ask questions and discuss afterwards.

People need to register (we are limited to 100 people) by clicking this link and entering their email address

and they will receive an email with a link to the Zoom meeting

4th Demand & Climate Justice

As some of you may know , the conversation about integrating social justice into our XR demands has been going on since the movement began, but has come into greater focus during the last month's as Black Lives Matter protests occur around the globe. Increasingly local and national XR groups, including XR USA, XR Leeds, XR Youth and others have been adopting 'the 4th Demand' in varying forms. There has recently been an announcement from central XRUK group that centralised arrangements have been made to support local people's assemblies about the adoption of a 4th Demand across the UK. They have requested that local groups wait for this before taking further localised 4th Demand action... Watch this space!

Alongside this process, this is an important time for us all to be deepening our understanding about the ways that social and economic injustice is woven into the climate and environmental damage we seek to redress. The Diversity group hopes to suggest reading material and links that can help each of us grasp more clearly these connections - and welcomes input from others in XR.
Here is a great up-to-date article about climate justice as it relates to the 3 demands:

There is also an incredible online workshop by Karl & Alima - 'Oppression, movement building and our relationships as activists' that we highly recommend

Disability Access to Online Meetings

The Diversity Working Group have proposed the following piece as part of our ongoing work into diversity and inclusion in Totnes and Area XR. Online meetings are a new area of expertise for many of us, and this piece is a work still in development so comes in blog form, with space at the end for anyone  to add further thoughts and suggestions.
The Diversity WG hopes in due course to produce a number of documents to assist us all in considering how to make our group as diverse and inclusive as possible.

Post Action Arrest Support – Where are we Now?

Have any rebels got a court date in London on the 6th of August? Are there other rebels from Totnes Area attending court on the same day? Possible liftshare travel organising! email Harry

It seems a long time ago since the heady days of rebellion in April, June and October last year and the mass arrests that resulted.

Many rebels are still dealing with the consequences. Most of us were keenly aware and well-trained in the likely outcomes of being arrested and remain deeply committed to non-violent civil disobedience as an effective means of confronting ecocidal government behaviour.

It appears that the CPS has now finished charging October arrestees. Of those remaining charged rebels (we believe 13 locally) none currently have to appear in court in person, some are subject to ongoing postponements and depending on their plea of Guilty or Not-Guilty, all are being dealt with by post, video, telephone or proxy via a solicitor.

There are of course many ways people can support the Rebellion without engaging in acts of civil disobedience. When we return to the streets we all wish to be prepared. If you are considering non-violent direct action we recommend that you do the training for NVDA, Know Your Rights, RISECWP and XR DNA. These really help with making a careful personal decision about your level of involvement and can all be found here

Arrest support information that is not available via the XR website can be found by contacting or for legal info
