Zoom Security for Big Meet Ups

We briefly had some uninvited and disruptive guests at the last big meet up. To minimise the chances that this could happen again, we've changed the settings on our XR zoom account to ensure maximum security and also have a dedicated tech person for the meet ups - huge thanks to Barry!  For added security, there will be a new zoom link for each meeting which will be posted in the newsletter rather than having a recurring link.

If you have any further concerns following from the meeting, do contact the hosting team at TAAhosting@protonmail.com

Comms Hub Training and Mattermost Overview

Multiple Sessions a Week on Reset TV resettv.co.uk.  You can join for part of these sessions if you can't make the whole 2 hours.  They're run by Ned Evans who is really helpful and can point you in the direction of shorter videos as well once you're on Mattermost.

Are you frustrated with all the different apps, programs and platforms XR uses? XR is moving to Mattermost! One place to reach all rebels. Mattermost can be used instead of WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and Zoom. The Comms Hub is the landing stage and contains Mattermost, XR UK Forums (for longer, more in-depth conversations) and XR UKCloud (for file storage and replaces Basecamp).  These sessions aim to give you an overview of how the Comms Hub and Mattermost work.  They'll be slow and steady, and will help everyone no matter your level of technological ability.

Mondays - 12:00-14:00

Thursdays - 11:00-13:00

Thursdays -17:00-19:00

Fridays - 10:00-12:00

Big meetups happen every 2 weeks on Tue, until Aug 18, 2020.  If you'd like to contribute something in a big meet up, please let the hosting team know in advance, preferably the Monday of the week preceding the big meet up because that's when we do our planning. TAAhosting@protonmail.com  Below are tentative ideas of what we may be focusing on in upcoming meet ups.

        Next one - Tues Jun 9, 2020 0615 PM - 2040 film screening

News

The photo at the top shows only about half of the rebels from Saturday's "No Going Back" action outside South Hams District Council. There were placards to make clear the stark choices we are facing as we come out of lockdown. Everyone wore masks and practiced social distancing but it was still great to meet physically once again as XR.

The action formed part of an England wide action (the first of it's kind simultaneously all over England - Wales and Scotland were not part of this action this time).

Just over 40 people came in the strong strong sunshine and both legal observers and police attended (including at one time a police van!)

You can see the livestream video (broadcast all over the world wih around 100,000 views) of the action from XR national which included a few minutes from XRTA here.  Totnes and Area footage begins just after footage of the unwarranted and possibly illegal fines and arrests in Parliament Square at around 35mins. No such trouble in Totnes where the police kept a respectful and friendly presence.

We're streamlining our Communication Channels to get information to your more quickly.
Information about actions and new initiatives is sometimes late getting to you because it currently goes through up to 4 people to eventually reach Affinity Groups and/ or Working Groups.

Your best way of getting information hot off the press, is to join the new platforms and to get onto our Totnes & Area Telegram Broadcast Channel for urgent updates. This was used very well for the recent actions and information sharing and will be used more and more to keep people informed of recent developments on actions!

You can download the Telegram app from your app store if you don't have it then Click here to join the Totnes and Area Broadcast channel. This may not work on some browsers so if it doesn't try another browser.

If you're not planning to be on the new platforms or Telegram, but you want to receive information, please contact your AG or WG coordinator to work out they can make sure you're in the communication loop.

To get onto the new communication platforms - that's UK Forums for working groups and Mattermost for chat - contact our local tech champion, Jonathan,(jahenderson777@gmail.com) who can send you an invite and help you through the process. There are also workshops on Reset TV https://www.resettv.co.uk/ to help you to get started.

If you're not in a WG or AG, you can contact Helen (totnesandareaanchor@protonmail.com) and we
can arrange to have a chat about how to make sure you get the information you want.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WAS A TYPO IN THIS ADDRESS IN A PREVIOUS NEWSLETTER - APOLOGIES FOR THAT - DO TRY AGAIN!

By the way, Reset TV now has a really good website which enables you to see exactly what's happening day by day – it's much more user friendly and well worth checking out for lots of talks and workshops. https://www.resettv.co.uk/

The new website is here and it's fantastic! Please check it out! https://xrta.org.uk/

Petitions, Actions and Virtual Actions

In Totnes this Saturday 6th June and anywhere on Sunday: Black Lives Matter solidarity - racial and climate justice are intertwined

Following the latest terrible event in the US, people in the UK are finding ways to express their support and solidarity (and to consider how important this is also in the UK). There are two ways you can join in in Totnes or wherever you live this coming weekend.

1) On Saturday in Totnes  - not organised by XR:

Saturday at 12:00 (arrive by 11.45) and find a safe place to stand (we will start at the ramp on the market square and line up 2 meters apart down the high street). The market is on and we don't want to disrupt the businesses running stalls there so please keep clear of the actual market space.
Please wear black, if you can. Please observe social distancing. There will be some spare face masks available and we encourage everyone to consider wearing a mask.

Totnes Civic (Market) Square

Public  · Hosted by

Beccy Strong

In support we kneel for 8 minutes 46 seconds

From Totnes Market Square form an orderly queue. Peacefully we gather (please observe social distancing, 2 m apart)

2) The following is copied from Facebook, XR (ST Ives I think, who originated this action):

No Going Back Sundays is a way for us to stand ‘alone together’ for the most important issues facing humanity.   Climate Justice and Racial Justice are intertwined.  Please join us this Sunday at 10am. We’re going to make signs dedicated to 'Black Lives Matter'. Please be aware of messaging and don’t use ‘All lives matter’ which is used to gaslight the reality of systemic racism.  Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Covid today – climate tomorrow – another world is possible -

join Telegram for up to the moment info and watch out for special email nearer the time.

We want to echo the moving picture of thousands of children's shoes in Trafalgar Square, reminding government and all of us that it is our children who need us to take action to build a better future, now. We need your support, and especially that of parents with school and college age children.

Date: Monday June 15th, 1pm (will be delayed to Tuesday or after if weather very poor)

Meeting place: the car park at the back of the old Co-op

Route: a slow physically distanced procession, holding children's shoes, from the car park through the precinct and up the High Street to the Civic Square, where a banner and supporters await for the procession to place their shoes in the square. XR Makers are creating a banner and placards (also to inform car drivers of what's happening)

Covid19, traffic and legal precautions: we will all wear masks (Outreach are making some for anyone without) and maintain 3metres social distancing. To enable other pedestrians to pass us safely, we will be holding up and talking to High Street traffic while we walk from the precinct to the Civic Square.  A Legal Observer will give a briefing before we set out.

Media: We are planning that local media including TV will be present.

What you need: Ideally bring children's shoes to place in the square, but if you don't have any, we plan to have spares, so come anyway! And if you can't come, perhaps you can provide shoes? Details on shoe-handling later...

What next? Let your AG coordinator or me know that you want to come and more info will be coming your way!

Action News

Reclaim the Streets -- No Going Back cycle action, 17 May

Around 35 cyclists took part in the excellent No Going Back critical mass action on 17 May -- most from XR Totnes and Area but also including several non-XR cycling campaigners. They and we share the objective of safer streets for cyclists and pedestrians. Indeed, that weekend was the 25th anniversary of their RECLAIM THE STREETS campaign -- a message that XR now shares. In the beautiful dawn dawn on 17th, we created a temporary cycle lane, using multi-coloured stencils and messaging, in a circuit around the two Totnes bridges. Social distancing was a top priority -- and all cyclists managed this superbly. Most of the group then cycled up Fore Street and High Street -- altogether a wonderful and inspiring contribution to the action that was taking place right across the country at the same time. A true Movement of Movements experience.

That action inspired local cyclists (including XR members!) to hold more Reclaim the Streets actions on the last Friday of every month. Some will be more XR-branded than others -- repeating the Movement of Movement theme. Routes will vary and will focus on specific local cycle routes that need to be completed or created. Look out for announcements, and come along!

Change is Now, Decide Together action, 30 May

Last Saturday, over 40 wonderful Totnes and Area rebels lined the Plymouth Road near the Council offices at Follaton House in a fabulous demonstration of passion and commitment. We emphasised the need for social distancing to minimise risk and to demonstrate that we were being safe -- and as a result we were spread along 150 metres or more of the busy main road. Many drivers waved or smiled their support.

This was was part of the nationwide action to promote a better future as the world emerges from the Covid pandemic. Over 2000 rebels in over 100 locations took part around the country. Totnes and Area should be rightfully proud -- our 40+ was more than double the average turn-out. We have a reputation for being especially active -- and we lived up to it on 17th!

Our messaging included a focus on the need for greener options over which the council has control -- for example the requirement for renewable energy to be used in new housing instead of gas or oil, and the inclusion of safe and convenient cycle, pedestrian and bus access to town from all new housing developments. Thanks to our perpetually-engaged Politics team for clarifying those priorities for us.

MORE ACTIONS IN THE PIPELINE!
Covid today -- climate tomorrow -- another day is possible

See the separate post about this action, planned for 15 or 16 June

Change is NOW - No Going Back...

Below is part of the text from an XR UK post about another inspiring, nation-wide action on Thursday, 25 June -- the day the UK's Committee on Climate Change is due to issue its report for this year. It's our opportunity to ramp up our pressure on government to take action in line with the priorities so clearly identified by the CCC.

"On the 25th June - the same day the Climate Change Committee will publish their report - we will build the pressure, taking action alongside young people demanding that they are protected, demanding that the government listens to the science and chooses to Act Now. The CCC report is annually ignored by our Parliament, our Government and our Treasury, despite working to the ‘too late’ target of 2050.

We will stand in solidarity with the youth and the countless people fighting against the injustices that perpetuate the climate crisis, and build invaluable relationships for the struggles ahead. We may all be weathering the same storm, but we are not all in the same boat.

The voice of tomorrow asks ‘Will you protect our future?’

The voice of tomorrow asks ‘Where is your plan?

The voice of tomorrow asks ‘Will you be complicit, or will you rebel?’

Government inaction costs lives. Act Now.

Save the date. More info on the action coming soon.

We've been putting together two small action planning teams, one for each action -- and we urgently need a coordinator for each. Please seriously consider taking on this role. There's plenty of support, and vast enthusiasm. For more info contact or email Bob Grose, Suzanne Dennis, Lu Overy or Emma Hopkins. THANK YOU."

Disability Access to Online Meetings

The Diversity Working Group have proposed the following piece as part of our ongoing work into diversity and inclusion in Totnes and Area XR. Online meetings are a new area of expertise for many of us, and this piece is a work still in development so comes in blog form, with space at the end for anyone  to add further thoughts and suggestions.
The Diversity WG hopes in due course to produce a number of documents to assist us all in considering how to make our group as diverse and inclusive as possible.

Post Action Arrest Support – Where are we Now?

It seems a long time ago since the heady days of rebellion in April, June and October last year and the mass arrests that resulted.

Many rebels are still dealing with the consequences. Most of us were keenly aware and well-trained in the likely outcomes of being arrested and remain deeply committed to non-violent civil disobedience as an effective means of confronting ecocidal government behaviour.

It appears that the CPS has now finished charging October arrestees. Of those remaining charged rebels (we believe 13 locally) none currently have to appear in court in person, some are subject to ongoing postponements and depending on their plea of Guilty or Not-Guilty, all are being dealt with by post, video, telephone or proxy via a solicitor.

There are of course many ways people can support the Rebellion without engaging in acts of civil disobedience. When we return to the streets we all wish to be prepared. If you are considering non-violent direct action we recommend that you do the training for NVDA, Know Your Rights, RISECWP and XR DNA. These really help with making a careful personal decision about your level of involvement and can all be found here https://www.resettv.co.uk/

Arrest support information that is not available via the XR website can be found by contacting xr-arrestwelfare@protonmail.com or for legal info XR-legal@riseup.net
