November Newsletter

2020 has brought many unexpected challenges but also opportunities to creatively adapt and respond to change.  I've felt buoyed by the generosity of sharing, the increased interest in sustainably growing and preserving food, and a renewed focus on working and learning together for a brighter future.   Thank you for the contributions you each make in growing our individual and collective resilience.

Don't forget to visit our website at www.permaculturetoowoomba.com.au to see all our upcoming events and lots of useful information.  Highlights include the regular book reviews, recipes, plant profiles, Permaculture Ethics, Principles and practical applications, and more.  Definitely worth a read!

If you have anything you'd like to share in our newsletters or on our website, we welcome all contributions!

We've welcomed many new members and visitors at recent events and have enjoyed catching up in person with the easing of COVID restrictions.  Thank you to Adam Gould for presenting a Keeping Quail  Connect and Learn and to Janet Dennison for welcoming us for a Garden Insights visit.

Please see details below of events in the next few weeks (scroll down for full details).  We have some really exciting things planned.
  • Connect and Learn evening - Monday 30 November - Fermented Thirst-Quenchers presented by Sam Rogers, Tim Nash and Debbie Bassingthwaighte,
  • End of Year Celebration - Sunday afternoon 6 December
Bookings via Eventbrite are essential for all events so that we know who is attending and can ensure attendee numbers are consistent with  COVID-safe guidelines.

David Holmgren's Permaculture Design Principles

4. Apply Self-Regulation and Accept Feedback

"We need to discourage inappropriate activity to ensure that systems can continue to function well.  The icon of the whole earth is the largest scale example we have of a self regulating ‘organism’ which is subject to feedback controls, like global warming. The proverb “the sins of the fathers are visited unto the children of the seventh generation” reminds us that negative feedback is often slow to emerge."

Presented by Sam, Tim and Debbie

As we head into summer it's the perfect time to craft your own fermented drinks to quench your thirst. Fermented drinks are rich in gut-friendly bacteria and can use seasonal gluts and potential waste such as pineapple and banana skins. What a great way to keep your family hydrated and marvel at the magic of creating drinks full of healthy goodness.

Sam, Tim and Debbie will demonstrate and tell us about some of their favourite fermented drinks that you can create in your own homes.

Learn how to create:

  • Kombucha and Jun
  • Water Kefir (Tibicos)
  • Ginger Beer
  • Kvass
  • Tepache
  • Probiotic Elderflower Fizz
  • Honey-Fermented Cordial

There will be samples to taste and SCOBYs to take home so you'll feel ready to start making your own fermented drinks at home.

8.00 pm - Connect - Light Supper and Share Table

A light supper will be served (with Gluten Free and Vegan options).  Sharing of produce opens at 8.00pm to allow plenty of time for everyone to place their donations on the Share Table, and then give you the opportunity to browse, connect and make your selections during supper.
