PROJECT UPDATES

Nurse Consultants: Lisa and Tina

READY? SET? GO!

Following recruitment commencement, Lisa and Tina are now “off and running” to quickly respond to participant’s reporting their symptoms/concerns.

Contact with eligible patients has been met with keen interest and willingness to help us better understand the support needs and care coordination aspects of a complex and challenging cancer diagnosis such as UGI Cancer.
Participants in the intervention arm are asked to report any disease-specific symptoms/issues of concern via PersonifyCare. We then respond to these Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) by providing targeted self-help resources and/or further evaluation of their symptoms/concerns via a phone call and clinical assessment. Communication between the PROpatient research team and the relevant clinical team is facilitated using the Clinician Patient Report, which provides a brief summary of the participant’s clinical issues and subsequent assessment and agreed action plan.
The PROpatient Nurses are grateful for patients' understanding and willingness to contribute to our research, especially at a time that is often difficult and burdensome for the patient and their family.

In addition to recruitment, the PROpatient Nurses have been busy writing and submitting conference abstracts to share their work with the wider Cancer Nursing and health care professional community.

PhD Students: Nadia and Tennille

Nadia Khan
Nadia’s PhD project aims to explore supportive care utilisation in pancreatic and oesophagogastric cancers. This will be achieved through exploration of patient and caregiver's supportive care experiences by way of qualitative interviews; a systematic review of the determinants of health service utilisation; and mapping the patterns of supportive care utilisation in Victoria, Australia by exploring linked data.

Qualitative interviews with patients and caregivers of patients diagnosed with pancreatic and oesophagogastric cancers has been completed, with clear gaps and opportunities for improvement identified. A systematic review exploring patient and service-level characteristics associated with health service utilisation in pancreatic cancer has been completed, with a manuscript currently in preparation. Phase 1 of the linked data for the Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Data Linkage project will be available for analysis by Q3, 2021. Additionally, palliative care utilisation will be explored through analysis of the Palliative Care Outcomes Collaboration dataset.

Nadia is currently undertaking an internship at Cancer Australia, reviewing clinical trials activity in pancreatic cancer, to inform the development of the National Pancreatic Cancer Roadmap. This work will form part of her PhD thesis.

Tennille Lewin
Tennille is currently finalising the UGI cancer specific Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) tool, once this has been developed patients recruited into the intervention arm of the PROpatient trial will be able to choose to use the long item PROs tool (63 items) or the UGI cancer specific PROs tool to report their symptoms in real time.

The 'Understanding health professionals' perceptions of a centralised model of cancer care coordination in facilitating supportive care to people diagnosed with Upper gastro-intestinal cancer' project has now been approved by ethics and recruitment of health professionals from the PROpatient trial sites has commenced.

The 'Understanding patients with Upper gastro-intestinal cancers perceptions of receiving supportive care via a centralised model of cancer care coordination' study protocol is currently in development and will be submitted to ethics at the end of April.
