Early Childhood
We started our new unit of study, Exercise! We have been learning about different ways to exercise. In the MIP classroom we have been playing a die rolling game to practice the exercises from the book, From Head to Toe, by Eric Carle. In the Blended classroom, the children have enjoyed running races in hallway and practicing yoga poses during group time.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students participated in One School, One Book Flat Stanley adventures over spring break.  Flat Stanley traveled with them to exciting places, and students journaled the experiences they shared together along the way!

First Grade
In ELA, students are “investigating the past”! They were so excited to have representatives from The Westmont Historical Society at school to share primary sources such as artifacts and photos from the early days of Westmont!

Second Grade
Second graders (2-K, 2-LMi, and 2-Mc) observed the entire life cycle of a plant using Wisconsin Fast PlantsⓇ seeds - the boys and girls were excellent pollinators and were amazed when seed pods developed.

Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR) has been completed with great success.  We called the test “I Am Ready” so that our students felt motivated and supported to take this test which consists of three 60 minute math tests and two 90 minute ELA tests.  Our AP, Mrs. Steinmeyer, did a very good job or developing a schedule and organizing every detail with staff and the district.

Our entire school wore blue on April 2 for Light it Up Blue Day to promote Autism Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.

We had our Author’s Visit on April 11 welcoming Natasha Tarpley, author of The Harlem Charade book that everyone in our school is reading! Natasha Tarpley is the author of the best-selling picture book, I Love My Hair, as well as other acclaimed titles for children and adults. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship among other awards. She is the co-founder of Voonderbar! Media, a multicultural children’s book media company. Read more here.
