Important Information Regarding the Presumptive Positive Case of COVID-19 in Rhode Island

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As many of you are aware RIDOH have announced they have a presumptive first positive case of COVID-19 here in Rhode Island. One of the top priorities of the Academy for Little Children is the safety, health, and well being of our students and staff. RIDOH recommends that schools continue education about good hygiene. As such, the Academy for Little Children will be increasing our already-committed focus to promote the following good hygiene practices:
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If unable to wash, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers (the CDC recommends at least 60% alcohol volume)
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover your coughs or sneezes with a tissue or your inner elbow(not with your hands)
  • Stay away from people who are sick and stay home when you are sick
At this time, we are also placing increased emphasis on our cleaning procedure - including, but not limited to:
  • An increased amount of hand sanitizer being available for families and staff - particularly in the foyer
  • Additional cleaning & disinfecting throughout the day of common touch areas such as door handles, counter tops, and our Procare fingerprint station in the foyer
  • Additional disinfecting at the end of the night (on top of our already-stringent cleaning & closing procedures)
We appreciate your efforts to work with us to provide a healthy environment for your student. There are many things you can do as a parent to help protect the health of your child at school, such as:
  • reminding them to wash their hands often with soap and water, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds before rinsing;
  • teaching them not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils; and,
  • teaching them to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues or their inner elbow.
Another critical component of a healthy school environment is keeping children home from school if they are sick, especially when they have a fever. Children who are ill should stay home until they are without symptoms for 24 hours. It is the Academy's policy that students and staff may not return to school until they have been fever free, without the use of fever reducing medications, for 24 hours.

We also ask that if you are contacted to come and pick up your child from school because they are ill that you do so promptly. This will help us to limit the exposure that other students and staff members will have to the illness. If you know that there are times when you will be unable to pick up your child in a timely manner, please have a back-up plan in place to ensure that this can be done. Again, we appreciate your help in maintaining the healthiest learning environment for your child while they are at school.
