To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; in order that ‘they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand.’”
(Mark 4:11-12)

This Sunday begins a journey with the parables of Jesus - these stories that are at times confusing and confounding.

In her book short stories by jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi
, author Amy-Jill Levine writes:

“Mystery” is not indicating something in need of a special key to unlock a singular meaning.  What makes the parables mysterious, or difficult, is that they challenge us to look into the hidden aspects of our own values, bringing to the surface unasked questions...

Jesus’ first followers knew that parables and the tellers of parables were there to prompt them to see the world in a different way, to challenge, and at times to indict.

The parables, if we take them seriously not as answers but as invitations, can continue to inform our lives. We might be better off thinking less about what they ‘mean’ and more about what they can ‘do’:  remind, provoke, refine, confront, disturb…

Join us as we learn from the rabbi who invites us to new life found in and through him.

Mennonite Creation Care Network's (MNNC) Pam De Young Net Zero Energy Fund awarded three congregations grants toward solar panels in July 2022. They are: Mountain Community Mennonite Church, Palmer Lake, CO; Paoli Mennonite Fellowship, Paoli, IN; and University Mennonite Church, State College, PA.

We also learned that our request to the West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund was successful!  We applied for $25,000 and will soon learn how much will be awarded.

Thanks to the Creation Care Committee for their work toward sustainability

Like to dream about creative ways of spending money?  As a church in Allegheny Mennonite Conference, UMC recently was gifted with over $31,000 as part of the sale of the International Guest House (IGH) in Washington DC.  We are encouraged to use the funds for God’s work of hospitality, welcome, peace, and justice as part of the IGH legacy. A few have stepped forward to be a part of an ad hoc committee to learn about the needs in Centre County community,  educate our UMC community, and solicit and evaluate ideas.  We welcome a few more to join us. Want to be a part?  Contact Kate for more information.

"A Place to Call Home" - Out of the Cold's annual fundraising dinner is happening on Monday September 26, 6pm at the Ramada.  Contact Kendra to make a reservation.

MennoMedia is publishing an Anabaptist Bible in an effort to help readers understand what it means to read Scripture through the distinctive “Christ-centered” lens of the Anabaptist tradition.  They are looking for study groups to submit reflections on assigned scriptural passages.  We at UMC can be one of those groups?  Interested?  Click HERE to learn more, and talk to Kate.

September 19-October 2 - I, Kate, will be on vacation in Italy.  I welcome your prayers and remind you to be in touch with one of our elders (Laura, Doug and Faith) if you need support.

Capax universi, capable of the universe are your arms
when they move with love.

And I know it is true that your feet are never
more alive than when they are in
defense of a good

I want to fund your efforts:  Stay near beauty,
for she will always strengthen you.

She will bring your mouth close to hers and
breathe - inspire you the way
light does the

The earth inhales God, why
should we not do
the same?

This sacred flame we tend inside needs
the chants of every tongue,
the communion with

As capable as God
are we.
