"Black Madonna" by Laura James

In some Christian traditions...

September 8 is celebrated as the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, the young woman who boldly sang of a revolutionary God turning the world upside down, who taught Jesus about the world, who stayed with him until the bitter end, presided over the windswept gathering at the first Pentecost — and became known in Eastern Christianity as Theotokos, “the house of God.”

Church Around the Table - there will not be a worship service in our building this week - worship will happen in backyards and on patios.  Contact Kate  if you need help finding a group to join.

Congregational Meeting - On Zoom, Sunday evening, September 11, at 6:30, we will gather to affirm our volunteer slate, pass our budget, begin a conversation around the possible purchase of the Voices Together hymnal, learn about a modification to Kate's covenant regarding sabbatical leave guidelines, and more.  ALL are welcome.  HERE is the zoom link.
Scriptures for Sunday:

Daniel 3

Consider reading the first two chapters of Daniel to understand the larger narrative arc of the story.  It's a great read!

In 2025, as part of the 500th anniversary commemoration of the beginnings of the Anabaptist movement, MennoMedia will publish the first-ever Anabaptist Bible. The Bible is an effort to help readers understand what it means to read Scripture through the distinctive “Christ-centered” lens of the Anabaptist tradition.

The distinctive aspect of the Anabaptist Bible will be the thousands of marginal notes that reflect the perspectives, insights and questions from 500 study groups from a broad spectrum of Anabaptist faith communities.

WE CAN BE ONE OF THOSE 500 STUDY GROUPS!  Groups will be assigned 3 scriptural passages to study together, and then submit their reflections to be added to the diverse wisdom of others.

Like to dream about creative ways of spending money?  As a church in Allegheny Mennonite Conference, UMC recently was gifted with over $31,000 as part of the sale of the International Guest House (IGH) in Washington DC.  We are encouraged to use the funds for God’s work of hospitality, welcome, peace, and justice as part of the IGH legacy. Leadership team is recommending an ad hoc committee of 5 people be formed to learn about the needs in Centre County community,  educate our UMC community, and solicit and evaluate ideas.  Want to be a part?  Contact Kate for more information.

An Avowal

As swimmers dare
to lie face to the sky
and water bears them,
as hawks rest upon air
and air sustains them,
so would I learn to attain
freefall, and float
into Creator Spirit’s deep embrace,
knowing no effort earns
that all-surrounding grace.
