This week we welcome new members into University Mennonite.
What a time of celebration! We will have a baptism, receive communion together and take the time to consider what it means to authentically follow Jesus.

No matter our membership status, we are all part of the Body of the One who calls us, sends us and sustains us.

Consider these words of commitment that we will proclaim together in our worship service this Sunday:

The church is the body of Christ,

created by God,

And sustained by the Spirit.

The church embodies Jesus’ way of life in the world,

revealing God’s reign through words and actions.

When we choose to become members of the church,

we commit ourselves to Christ,

to one another,

and to God’s mission of healing and hope.

When we fall short of this vision,

we commit to turning toward one another with compassion

and to turning toward Christ,

our strength and our guide.

from Voices Together Hymnal #269

Just as the calendar began to say Summer

I went out of the schoolhouse fast

and through the garden to the woods,

and spent all summer forgetting what I'd been taught -

two times two, and diligence and so forth,

how to be modest, and useful and how to succeed and so forth,

machines and oil and plastic and money and so forth.

By fall I had healed somewhat, but was summoned back

to the chalky rooms and the desks to sit and remember

the way the river kept rolling it's pebbles,

the way the wild wren sang though they hadn't a penny in the bank,

the way the flowers were dressed in nothing but light.
