TCS Times

Nau mai, haere mai ngā whānau o te kura o Tahatai.  A very warm welcome to all our TCS students and their families.

Kia Ora Whānau,

A very warm welcome to our new students and their whānau. It was lovely meeting everyone at Monday's pōwhiri and we are thrilled to have you join the TCS community.

Term 2 has started with beautiful weather, very settled classrooms, and a lot happening with property improvements. I'd like to thank you for your understanding and ongoing patience with any inconvenience that the administration construction work may be causing. I have provided an update about this further in my bulletin.

Term 2 will be largely focused on supporting students towards achieving their learning goals. We want to ensure disruption to learning time is minimised, providing the very best conditions for students to be the very best they can be. Teachers will continue promoting our school's Explorer Values and developing the Tahatai Explorer Skills.

We have sadly had a run of vandalism issues, largely with youth who do not attend Tahatai. This is disappointing as we continue to strive towards being a valued resource for our local community. Being community-minded, we do require your help. If you see anyone in school looking suspicious, on the roof, or after dark, please contact the police immediately. We greatly appreciate your support.

Below are a few reminders that will help our school remain a safe and fun place to be. Please read these as they are important for helping us manage the school on a daily basis:
  • Kiss'n Go is designed to provide a safe and efficient drop-off point for families. Please ensure you kiss your child at home, stay in your vehicle and have them exit the car on the left-hand side.
  • The Bike Bay is not for parents to meet children in. This space (after school) gets congested and we want to keep it clear for students to exit safely.
  • Dogs are not permitted on school grounds; not during a school day or out of school hours.
  • Parents, please use the school crossings. As a community, we are collectively responsible for the safety of the children.
  • Parking on yellow lines may be convenient to you but a danger for others. Please park legally.
Teacher Only Days:
The teachers union negotiated 8 teacher-only days to be taken across three years. These were part of the Ministry of Education's response to support teacher workloads. We are currently in the second year and have selected teacher-only days to either align with public holidays or as a way to support our teachers. Below are the following dates we have set for this year:
  • Friday 4th June
  • Monday 26th July
  • Friday 3rd September
School Uniforms:
We have run low on some uniform stock items due to unprecedented demand in Term 1. I know many are patiently waiting for the next order to come through, and we hope to have these arrive in the next couple of weeks. As soon as they do arrive, an email notification will be sent out to all families. Thank you for your patience with this.

Opening of the Administration Block:
You may have noticed the administration building has been a busy construction site of late. The building is certainly taking shape and we are well into the final stages of finishing this project. Unfortunately, an issue with drainage has been discovered and C3 are working towards rectifying this. A date for reopening is not able to be provided until this work can be completed and Tauranga City Council can complete their inspections. As soon as more information comes to light, we will be able to inform you of an opening and blessing for this amazing resource. We do hope this will happen before the end of this month.

Basketball Court:
The basketball court fencing project is well underway and we will have the backboards reinstated at the beginning of next week. The basketball court is a resource first and foremost for our students. The community is welcome to use it out of school hours providing the rules displayed on the Evans Road boundary fence are adhered to. We can't wait to see our recently registered basketball teams train on this wonderful facility.

Thank you again for all you are doing to support the children and the school. We are so fortunate to have such an incredible school community.

Ngā mihi

Pāpāmoa Civic Memorial Service - ANZAC 2021
Emily, Ariana and Milla from the Tahatai Coast School Student Council laid a wreathe on ANZAC Day at the Pāpāmoa Memorial Service on behalf of the Tahatai students, staff, whānau and community.
They were joined at the conclusion of the service by three ex Tahatai students - Caleb Corboy (Able Weapons Technician), Hannah Thomas (Able Steward) and Maddy Karauna (Head Girl of Pāpāmoa College). Maddy delivered a speech exceptionally well during the service, while Caleb and Hannah were involved in the March on and off at the start and finish of the service.

Lest we forget.
Pink Shirt Day 2021
We will be holding Pink Shirt Day at Tahatai on Thursday, 27th May.  This is an anti-bullying day when people wear pink to symbolise a stand against bullying.  The Student Council is organising some activities/events on this day.  This will include a parade out on the astroturf.  Tahatai students and staff can wear anything pink and maybe decorate their hair with pink spray!  More information regarding this day will be sent out early next week.
Pink T-shirts can be purchased from Cotton On by clicking on the link below.  All of the proceeds from the sale of these T-shirts goes towards the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.

Urgent Message
re:New Entrant Enrolments

Do you have a child turning 5 this year?

We urgently need an indication of how many 5 year olds we will be expecting during 2021. If you have a child due to start school, please come and see us to complete the enrolment paperwork.

This helps us to plan a smooth transition into school for your child; helps us to plan staffing for the New Entrant classes; and ensures that you are invited to the relevant parent information meetings. Thank you.
Te Whānau ā Tahatai - Breakfast Club

Te Whānau ā Tahatai started on Monday. There was Weetbix, toast, fun and friendship. We were well supported by our outstanding Student Leaders on the first day and lots of students had breakfast with us.
A huge thank you goes out to Nick Mills Trucking for the regular financial contributions. Also, the TCS PTA who have very generously paid for the sign and the purchase of two toasters. Simon from FreshChoice Supermarket Papamoa has also supported us hugely with our supply of bread for toast. Our final shout out goes to parent and Board Member Ali Teo who very kindly donated her time to supply the artwork below for the new venture. Thank you so much to all of you, we couldn’t do it without you!

We would still appreciate any donations of tinned fruit or milo from the school community, please send them along to your child’s class. If you would like to volunteer your time one or two mornings per term to help out, either with breakfast or with the sharing of a craft, skill or sports activity, we would love to hear from you.  Please contact and we will slot you into our timetable.

Rotorua Mini Marathon
We have a group of our Tahatai students running today in the Rotorua Mini Marathon.  This mini marathon is open for Year 1-8 students from Bay of Plenty schools and is run in conjunction with the Rotorua Marathon which will be held tomorrow.  Please check out the photo below of our students lining up ready to start.

Congratulations to Emily Barback who won two gold medals in gymnastics. She competed in the qualifying gymnastics competition for nationals in Christchurch during the holidays. She won first place on the bar and floor and will now continue to train for the nationals competition which will be held in July.  Emily said “It was an awesome experience”. We are all super proud of you Emily.

Congratulations to Kortez Dorset who won two silver medals in Jiu Jitsu. On 17th April Kortez went to New Plymouth to compete in the Maori No-Gi jiu jitsu Nationals, he had 3 hard fights (Toughest kids yet!) and cleaned up with silver by only 2 points difference!  Two weeks later after fight training nearly everyday of the school holidays he was back in Auckland for the Auckland No-Gi Nationals! He had to fight someone with over two years experience compared to his 10 months (as there was no one in his belt & weight division) and just missed out on points but got the silver for the win! We are super proud of you Kortez.

International Competitions and Assessments (ICAS) Exams

We are delighted to inform you that Tahatai will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS AssessmentsTM again this year.
ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee and Digital Technologies.
Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.
The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment, which has been running for 40 years. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision.
All exams will be held at school, on the dates below, and are available for the following levels:
