TCS Times

Nau mai, haere mai ngā whānau o te kura o Tahatai.  A very warm welcome to all our TCS students and their families.

Term 3 is well underway and it is exciting to see how quickly the children have settled back into routines and life at Tahatai Coast School. The focus this term is to work as hard as we can on ensuring settled environments that promote the very best learning opportunities. Through the 10 weeks, teachers will be working hard to provide support and guidance that will enable students to be the very best that they can be. A particular emphasis will be on working towards students' individual goals.  To support this work, it would be great if you could ask questions about your child's learning at the end of each day and assist them with any homework tasks they may have.

The term began with a powhiri to welcome new students, whānau, and staff. The weather didn't play ball but our students certainly did! Their positive attitudes and resilience in the rain showed a high level of respect and maturity. I was very proud of them as they sang the waiata and made the start to the term so successful. Ngā Pōtiki Kaumatua, Colin Reeder, was present for our powhiri and commented on how proud he was of the school. In particular, the student behaviour and how well they sang the waiata. Below is a photo of our very newest students who were welcomed last Monday. They are new entrants based in Room 4 with Mrs Bidios. Check out their fantastic self-portraits.
There is a lot happening on the property front:
  • The admin building is on schedule with the inside now being gutted and the scaffolding being assembled.  The scaffold will be wrapped to allow weather tightness when the roof is removed. We appreciate your patience with this project, and any inconvenience it may be causing - the final result will be well worth the wait!
  • Final preparations are being made for the four roll-growth classrooms to be built in term 4. These will be located between the bike container and the eastern boundary fence. This project involves the relocation of the pohutukawa tree that is located next to Room 7, the After School Care building, and the basketball court. The four classrooms will include break out learning spaces, decking, and toilets.
  • There are a number of landscaping jobs on the go and about to start. Greg has been busy clearing gardens and planting new trees along the hall entrance. We have also laid a new concrete path to provide an entranceway that is separate from the hall car park. Next to start will be the landscaping outside the Koru Room as well as the area around the scooter track and vegetable garden.
  • Planning is underway for the extension of the senior playground, with work to begin term 4. The cost for this project is being shared between the PTA and the school board of trustees. It will be a very welcome resource for the school once completed.
A quick reminder that the school will be closed for tuition on Monday, 10th August.  This is a Teacher Only Day which is a part of the Teachers' Union negotiation with the Ministry of Education.  The day will be used to support teachers with managing their workload.

I have been impressed with the levels of training happening throughout the school for next week's Tahatai Cross-Country. I know the students would love to see a big parent turn out to cheer them on, so please add the morning of Friday 7th August to your family calendar.

Policy Review: Whānau Input

Once a term, the SchoolDocs team gathers and collates feedback on policy content, using it to revise and update where appropriate. This means that our school benefits from the collective review of the policy, as other schools may have:

• experiences dealing with issues that our school hasn’t faced yet

• board personnel with particular skills and insights

• different cultures and contexts that provide a more well-rounded view of the policy/procedure.

As parents/caregivers, if you wish to be involved in this review:

  1. Visit the website https://tahatai.schooldocs.co.nz/1893.htm

  2. Enter the username (tahatai) and password (coast).

  3. Follow the link to the relevant policy as listed.

  4. Read the policy.

  5. Click the Policy Review button at the top right-hand corner of the page.

  6. Select the reviewer type "Parent".

  7. Enter your name (optional).

  8. Submit your ratings and comments.

  9. If you don't have internet access, the school office staff can provide you with printed copies of the policy and a review form.

This term, parents/caregivers are invited to review the Learning Support policy.

New Entrant Enrolments

Do you have a child turning 5 in the next 6 months?

It would be greatly appreciated if you could enrol your child 6 months prior to their intended start date at school...or as soon as possible if they are starting school this year.

This helps us to plan a smooth transition into school for your child; helps us to plan staffing for the New Entrant classes; and ensures that you are invited to the relevant parent information meetings.
Yummy Stickers
We have registered for another year.
Collect the Yummy cut-out labels from bags (each cut-out label is worth 10 stickers) and individual Yummy apple stickers for your school’s share of the $200,000 free DG Sport sports gear prize pool. The students are really enjoying playing with all the equipment from last year's yummy stickers collection.
