TCS Times

Nau mai, haere mai ngā whānau o te kura o Tahatai.  A very warm welcome to all our TCS students and their families.

Life at Tahatai is never dull as there is always so much happening throughout the school. I continue to be amazed at our students' eagerness to be involved in every opportunity on offer. Since the last school newsletter, we have had students opt into participating in the ICAS exams, deliver speeches to their class, and be involved in the National Young Leaders Day.  I'd like to pass on a special congratulations to all our Year 5/6 speech finalists who did an outstanding job delivering their speeches in front of their Whānau teams. The diversity in their choice of topic was inspiring and showcased the incredibly high calibre of learners we have here at Tahatai.
With the hard work of both our PTA (fundraising) and Board of Trustees (meeting any additional costs), I have been able to work with Playground Creations to design and build a new senior school adventure playground. This process has involved capturing student voice, where our Student Councillors shared the design with their peers for feedback. The final product is going to be epic and an amazing resource for the children and community. The playground will be an extension of the existing one located at the far end of the school field. It will have all the equipment the children want, including balance surfboards and two basket swings. Work will begin in term 4 with the aim to have it ready for use before the end of the school year. Thanks, PTA and Board of Trustees!
Thank you for all your continued support as we remain working at Alert Level 2. With your help, we are able to ensure we are implementing safe practices for all the children while at school. I know that I feel very proud to be a part of a community that puts the children's needs first and is able to work so well together. The result is happy children making every moment count while at Tahatai.

A final shout out to Milla Cudby for her beautiful singing at the Bay Music School 12 Hour Music Marathon that was hosted at Tahatai Coast School last weekend.  Milla sang a set with her student band that included ex-students, Charlie Taane and Visaya Murray. Karcia Axis, another of our Tahatai students, also sang as a part of this event.  Parent, Tiki Taane, was also involved and performed the last gig of the night. The 12-hour music marathon was organised by Adam Mclean and has raised over $12,000. This money will be used to provide music opportunities for children in the Bay of Plenty.

Heels Up Virtual Challenge - Cape Reinga to Bluff
In the coming weeks, we will be holding a fun event to see how quickly the classes at Tahatai can walk or run the 2085 kilometres from Cape Reinga to Bluff.  It is hoped that each class will complete this distance in less than 10 weeks.  Classes will be able to track their progress online, with an icon that shows the distance covered on a map of New Zealand.  There will also be spot prizes for the distance covered by individuals and for the students that best support their fellow class members.  We will be asking for donations from the students and staff that participate in this event.  All money raised will go to the 'I Ride With Hame Trust,' which provides scholarships for Year 12 students to go on the Spirit of Adventure.  More information about this exciting event will be sent out in the coming weeks.
Year 3/4 Gymsport
On Friday 4 September, a small team of Year 3 and 4 gymnasts attended the Te Puke Gymsport competition. For many of the girls, it was their first gymnastics competition. There were some great results:
Gracie C                                 4th overall                Open Junior Division
Jade H                                   1st equal overall       Springers Division
Jade H, Maddy V, Milan S.     2nd overall team      Springers Division
Indi R                                      2nd overall               Flyers Division
The girls all did amazing routines and represented Tahatai Coast School beautifully. Well done girls!
Mrs Adam would also like to thank the Year 5 and 6 competitive gymnasts who helped train the girls during the lunchtime elective.
National Young Leaders Day 2020
On Tuesday this week, our Year 5/6 Student Councillors attended the virtual National Young Leaders Day.  During this event, the children had the opportunity to listen to a variety of inspirational speakers.  This year, the speakers included William Pike, Riley Hathaway, Okirano Tilaia and Stan Walker.  The NYLD theme for 2020 was 'Kia Kaha, Kia Maia, Kia Manawanui' ('Be Strong, Be Brave, Be Steadfast').  This was an amazing opportunity for the students to further develop their leadership skills.
Urgent message
re:New Entrant Enrolments

Do you have a child turning 5 later this year or during 2021?

We urgently need an indication of how many 5 year olds we will be expecting to start school in 2021. If you have a child due to start school next year, please come and see us to complete the enrolment paperwork.

This helps us to plan a smooth transition into school for your child; helps us to plan staffing for the New Entrant classes; and ensures that you are invited to the relevant parent information meetings. Thank you
