The Lake in St Stephen's Green, Dublin...
St Stephen's Green, a 22 acre park located in the middle of Dublin, beckons residents and visitors alike to rest and enjoy the natural beauty on display. The park also serves as a central landmark to the city and offers multiple meeting points for explorers!
One of the highlights of Culture Honey Touring's first full day in Dublin will be visiting the Book of Kells, which some say is Medieval Europe’s greatest treasure! For those of us traveling onto Iona, Scotland, there will be a special significance since modern scholarship has credited the authorship of these famous manuscripts to the Columbian monks on the Isle of Iona!
Sometime between the 6th and 8th centuries, faithful monks created an illuminated bible that is one of Europes most treasured medieval masterpieces....
The decorated pages are a beautiful testament to the dedication, education and creativity of these Irish monks. The images are explained during this fabulous multi-media presentation which is housed on the campus of Trinity College in Dublin.
The symbolism of the illuminated works are wonderfully explored within the exhibit....
Also included in our time will be a visit to the "Long Room", said to be one of the worlds most beautiful libraries. More can be learned about the significant contribution the Irish made to western history and why Ireland is known as the land of "Saints and Scholars" in the recommended book, "How the Irish Saved Western Civilization" by Thomas Cahill.
The Long Room at Trinity College
Finished in 1732 the Long Room (library) stretches over 70 yards in length. Located in Trinity College it is the longest single-chamber library in the world and houses some 200,000 books. The most famous is the Book of Kells, which some feel could be called, "The Book of Iona", or "Book of Columba" dated to the 800's. The library also houses the Book of Durrow which predates the Book of Kells, having been dated to the 700's. Durrow is a stop on our pilgrimage, where among other things we will spend time at St Columba's well...
Looking "up" to Christ Church Cathedral ...
After an hour long led walking tour gives the History of Dublin in the morning and time spent with the the Book of Kells exhibit and the Long Room we will break for an early self-catered lunch. We'll have multiple tried and true recommendations for you or you can wander and explore to discover a lovely spot to enjoy! Our pilgrimage together will then resume with a visit to Christ Church Cathedral.
In it's 1,000 year history, Christ Church in Dublin has become known as the "spiritual heart" of the city. Originally built as a Viking church, it's crypt is one of the largest in the United Kingdom and Ireland, dating back to the 12th century.
In Christ Church we will contemplate the final resting place of the famed, "Strongbow" and others...
And like most cathedrals in the UK, there is much history to absorb. There are plaques to read, and books and booklets for no cost and for purchase. Often, however, some of the most meaningful moments can be when one slips away from the other visitors to a quiet corner for prayer...or to engage in the spiritual practice of walking the labyrinth....
As well as always looking "up" when exploring, it is an interesting practice to also notice where our feet step...
Above we find a pattern that on first glance seems to show two pilgrims with their walking sticks. We would be forgiven however, because the significance of the "Friars" is much more wry! Known as the "Foxy Friars", these were poor monks during the medieval times that...wait, join us in May or September and learn the story!
St Patricks Cathedral is the national cathedral of Ireland and was founded in 1191...
St Patricks Cathedral has held the "cathedral" distinction (mostly signifying a church run by a bishop) since 1212, and now shares the cathedral distinction with Christ Church of Dublin. We will be visiting both cathedrals during out Historical overview day in Dublin!
The ornate interior of St Patricks displays flags from throughout the cathedrals varied history...
Founded in 1191, St Patricks's is the national cathedral of the Church of Ireland. From history we know that during the 18th and 19th centuries large portions of the British Army were made up of Irish men. It has been estimated that up to 30-40% of the army which defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo was Irish! Saint Patrick’s Cathedral began receiving regimental colours in the 1850s and these flags are on display to this day....
The gorgeous stained glass windows keep watch over the sanctuary as Evensong is sung everyday by choir and clergy.
While the gorgeous stained glass windows look on, sung Evensong has been practiced by the choir and clergy at St Patricks since 1432! We will experience this beautiful tradition as we close out our day in Dublin!

About Celtic Way Pilgrimages
At Culture Honey, we have discovered a deeply fulfilling spiritual thread of the Christian faith originating in Celtic Ireland and Scotland. We have written many articles which are published on CultureHoney.com about travel to these lovely countries and the benefits of the Celtic pathway to the modern, spiritual, and holistic human experience. Our favorite influences are David Whyte, John Philip Newell, Mirabai Starr, and Richard Rohr to name a few! We have experienced the beauty in these serene and sometimes rugged destinations and we have known the peace that the spiritual practices of liturgy, silence and meditation offer us. We have enjoyed and benefited greatly from learning the historical stories and significance of the places we plan to visit. Now it is our great joy to offer to share these things with you!
