Synthesizing Effects from Quasi-Experiments in Education: Challenges and Remaining Questions by Dr. Betsy Becker

Quasi-experimental studies (QEs) are a staple of education sciences, but their diversity presents certain challenges to research synthesis and meta-analysis. From the stage of problem formulation through the entire meta-analysis process, quasi- experimental studies require special attention. In this talk, Dr. Betsy Becker will give an overview of these challenges faced in meta-analyses of QEs, and offer some thoughts on ways to address them, by way of both practical (e.g., study-feature coding, Risk of Bias assessments) and statistical means, including meta-regression. Examples will be drawn from the literatures on alternative routes to teaching, and professional development and coaching for teachers.

New Exam for Beginning Teachers Requires School District Support

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has decided to adopt the Educative Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) as an appraisal for teacher candidates across all certification areas. The TEA may replace the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) exam with the edTPA at some point in the future. There is a role for each school district that places student teachers across the state. In the P-12 Partner Engagement and Support webinar, a member of the edTPA National Academy will guide participants through a close examination of how edTPA supports a rigorous and meaningful experience for teacher candidates and P-12 students.
