Partnership with Elshadai Children's Villages

At the end of 2018 CutlviAid entered into a formal agreement with Elshadai Relief and Development Association ElShadai.  CultivAid will support the implementation of modernized agricultural technologies and the associated training program at ElShadai Kallamino Children’s Village and school, located in Mekelle.
Since 2014 CultivAid has been on the ground supporting agricultural development at TDA Kallamino as well as ElShadai Children’s Village in Wukro.  Our work aims to enhance the school/village’s income year by year with the long-term objective of becoming 100% self-reliant. These farms demonstrate new technologies and provide training programs to diffuse the adaptation of these technologies. Our new program with ElShadai will initiate a demonstration site of 1 hectare of vegetable production and a 1 hectare of fruit trees using modern agricultural technology, with the ultimate goal of turning the 8 hectare farm into an agricultural innovation and technology center – AITEC farm.
The program will expand our Internship program for Ethiopian agronomists and enable the development of more experienced professionals.

New Course development with STEMpower

STEMpower, an initiative of the Gelfand Family Charitable Trust (“GFCT”)  has been at the forefront of the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) education movement in Ethiopia. For the past 13 years STEMpower has been bringing STEM enrichment to Ethiopia. This year, CultivAid has partnered with STEMpower to develop two new courses that will be initiated at Bahir Dar STEM center together with Bahir Dar University. The courses will provide high school students with practical hands on knowledge in 1) agricultural science and engineering and 2) water science and engineering. The program will strengthen STEM centers to be as relevant as possible in developing a new generation of innovative scientists that will provide solutions to the most dire challenges in Ethiopia.
We look forward to implementing the course in September 2019!

Avocado Training sites

Together with the support of MASHAV Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation and the Embassy of Israel in Ethiopia, CultivAid has established two Avocado training sites in Tigray.  One site, 2 hectares at TDA - Kallamino AITEC farm (2015-2016) and the second at ElShada Children’s Village in Wukro (2017-2018).  This year our site at Kallamino has begun to produce fruit!
The training sites are inline with the USAID-MASHAV-MoANR Smallholder Horticulture Program which aims to promote economic growth in rural areas through strengthening commercialization of small farmers. Avocados have high potential for export and are also highly nutritious. The growth of a competitive and sustainable fruit sector will have positive impact on production for domestic consumption and production for export.
CultivAid is providing on going trainings to students, development agents, agronomists and experts in Avocado Cultivation.  Trainings cover aspects of irrigation, fertilization, bed making, staking, pruning and of course the best way to eat avocado!
