Apple Research Site at ElShadai Children's Village, Wukro, Tigray, Ethiopia

CultivAid and ElShadai Wukro have been working together for the past 4 years.  CultivAid has been providing technical support and guidance to ElShadai in the implementation of a demonstration Avocado orchard, a vegetable demonstration plot, a weather station, improvements in Dairy management and a sprinkler irrigation system.  In June of this year, a research apple orchard site was established to determine if apple production could be successful in the region.  The plot contains 90% Anna and 10% Dorsett Golden Variety. The trees at ElShadai are purified varieties that were grafted from scions imported from Israel with official certifications.  The high-quality trees will enable the orchard to become a mother tree orchard and be used to propagate additional trees that can enable scaling up of apple production in the region.

We have two demonstration sites, 1.84 hectare at TDA Kallamino in Mekelle and 1 hectare at ElShadai in Wukro. With our local partners the TDA and ElShadai along with MASHAV we are demonstrating, training and researching proper Avocado cultivation in Ethiopia.
