The first weekend in July marks the start of the summer season. The unofficial kick off may be Memorial Day and the actual date may be the summer solstice at the end of June, but it’s July 4th that symbolizes our freedom from the usual stressors, responsibilities, and commitments we balance during the rest of the year. We’re looking forward to the weekly BBQs, pool parties, beach days, weekend trips, and summer soirees that dot our calendars over the next two months, soaking up the sun while allowing our cares to drift away. After a year of making the best of staying close to home, Dwayne Bergmann is diving into the season by breaking free from routine and celebrating Independence Day by hitting the road. He’s sharing his go-to summertime recipes, designer-approved hot weather staples, and party tips for your best July 4th yet no matter where you’re celebrating beyond your own backyard.
Summer-ize any classic recipe by adding fresh fruit to the mix! Dwayne enjoys spicing up a classic margarita with watermelon and mint or mangoav with a dash of chili lime powder, paired with finely chopped fruit salsa and cinnamon sugar dusted crisps. Plucked fresh from his garden and pre-washed and cut for easy transportation, he loves to add fruit to salads, granola, and even folded into his homemade ice cream. Dwayne’s favorite July 4th dessert has got to be a Mixed Berry Trifle with layers of red and blue berries, light as air sponge cake, and fresh whipped cream topped with lemon zest and mint. Make it mini by packing the layers into mason jars with tight fitting lids so everyone can enjoy their own slice of heaven.
When getting out of town for the holiday weekend, we all still love to have our creature comforts available to us. Dwayne’s weekend getaway packing list always includes a lightweight linen robe for lazy vaca mornings, casual yet chic shoes that he can walk in all day, and a carry all tote that can go from beach to boulevard. During this July 4th getaway, Dwayne is focusing on easy to wear, easy to pack separates that can be mixed and matched to fit any activity or occasion. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton, linen and loose knits for the perfect transition pieces. The same principle can be applied to swapping out your seasonal home linens!
No matter where you’re celebrating this July 4th, you can bring the party with you! Pack some of the recipes we shared above and sport your chicest lightweight outfit before kicking off your shoes and getting into the party state of mind. You can truly be on vacation anywhere with some mindful meditation, removing your thoughts from work and home stress, losing yourself in the moment. This weekend is an opportunity to declare your independence from whatever weighs you down and raise a glass, and maybe a sparkler, to the glory days ahead.
