It’s that time of year again! When the responsibilities and schedules of our daily lives fall back into place and each family member has their own agenda to manage. Dwayne Bergmann’s kiddos are back to school, but this year they feel more prepared than ever. Not just with backpacks full of sanitizer and a mask for every day of the week, but armed with kid-friendly time management techniques, organization systems, and creative outlets. Make this school year all about helping your family to run like a well-oiled machine with a few helpful tips.
With so many moving parts to manage – between school, homework, extracurriculars, playdates, and of course, family time – it can feel overwhelming to think about coordinating everyone’s schedules in a way that feels manageable. Setting a structure to how and when each task or activity needs to get done will help everyone stay on schedule and might even free up some time! Break out the family calendar and indicate who packs lunches, who’s on carpool duty, when permission slips are due, etc. This takes the guesswork out of the equation and hold each member accountable for their part.
He’s said it before and he’ll say it again… organization is the single most influential factor when it comes to staying sane when you have a busy schedule like Dwayne does. For his little ones, color coding has worked like a charm. From their chore chart to their toy chests, each is responsible for maintaining their belongings and responsibilities based on their unique color code. And it’s not just for kids! Adults are color oriented too. Consider assigning yourself blue breaks throughout your day to take a moment of respite to breathe and reset!
What’s working hard with no reward? Make sure to establish milestones of rewards throughout your weekly schedule. This can be sweet treats, family game nights, special guests, or even family outings. Each family member can contribute their version of a reward to be rotated into the fold since reward receptors are different for everyone. Be sure to set attainable goals so they’re reasonable to reach with everything else you’re managing. And yes, a glass or two of wine at the end of the night counts as a well-deserved treat. You earned it!
