Next up in our summer mini-series Design Guide by Room, Dwayne Bergmann opens the doors to the Master Suite. This cluster of private quarters has always been thought of as an escape from the rest of the home, but this past year in particular, it is serving as an oasis. Throughout our Your 4 Walls series, Dwayne has shared tips on how to achieve the 5-star feel at home, turn your en suite bathroom into an at-home spa, and organize your closet for maximum efficiency without sacrificing style. In this installment, we’ll revisit some of those best practices, along with design idea for restful nights and luxurious days.
“Design the life you want to live” are Dwayne’s words to live by. As a designer he is tasked with creating a world for his clients that feels like the best version of themselves. Nowhere is this more true than the master bedroom, bathroom and closet. The most personal, intimate spaces in any home, these should be a direct reflection of their inhabitants. Ask yourself, how do you want to feel when getting ready for a glamourous event, luxuriating in bed on a lazy Sunday morning, or winding down from a stressful day in the tub? Channeling the desired outcome will help shape the journey to getting there. Another important and often overlooked element of design is intuition. Understanding how you move about the space, where you naturally reach for things, or organizing in a way that makes sense for you all contribute to that feeling of ease and immediate comfort.
For busy families, jetsetters, and workaholics alike, there’s nothing quite so welcoming as a hot shower and cozy bed. No matter where you find yourself in the world, those simple pleasures can make you feel renewed and restored. Treat yourself to 5-star worthy accommodations with some luxurious upgrades. Dwayne loves a fluffy white towel, oversized bathrobe, crisp linens and plush bedding. Take cues from resort living by adding a breakfast tray and throw blanket to your bed scape and a chic water carafe on your bedside table. Consider switching the overhead lighting to dimmers and replacing lamps with softer glowing bulbs. Lighting control goes a long way in making a room feel thoughtfully designed.Infuse some life and color into the space with fresh flowers. In the bathroom, Dwayne recommends opting for dried eucalyptus or lavender because the steam of your shower or bath releases the deliciously scented oils into the air for a spa-like aromatic experience. And finally, the aesthetic of your closet can also have a big impact on peace of mind, so Dwayne is a big proponent of organization techniques like color filing, stylish storage solutions, and luxury retail worthy displays of precious pieces.
