Announcing the 2023 Summer Institute on Sustainable Health Systems
We are excited to announce the launch of the 2023 Summer Institute on Sustainable Health Systems! This year's Institute is hosted by CASCADES and ELESH, in partnership with the CIHR-IHSPR, CIHR-IPPH, and CIHR-III.
The Summer Institute will to be held the week of June 19 – 22, 2023, online and in-person at eleven hub locations across Canada.
Planetary Health Menus: Implementing plant-rich diets for people and the planet

Join the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care, PEACH Health Ontario, CASCADES, and Nourish as we welcome speakers Elísabet H. Brynjarsdóttir and Lindi Close, master’s graduates of UBC, who will present on the integration of plant-rich menus within hospitals and long-term care centres. They will discuss the results of a survey conducted across Ontario, to gather information about plant-based initiatives In health care and share a simple tool developed to help those looking to make changes to their menu.
We will also hear from Marianne Katusin, Director of Support Services at Halton Healthcare, who will speak about the process of integrating plant-based choices into hospital menus and Hayley Lapalme, Co-Executive Director of Nourish, will speak about Nourish’s new Planetary Health Menus climate program to help institutions reduce their food-related emissions.
From Réseau-1 Québec, Pour une responsabilité environnementale et sociale des professionnels de la santé (January 30, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. ET) will address the importance of environmental determinants of health and their close links to social determinants. A presentation by Dr. Nicolas Senn, Professor of Family Medicine at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne and Chief Physician of the Department of Family Medicine at Unisanté, Lausanne, Switzerland with guest panelists Ms. Amy Ma (patient partner, CASCADES), Dr. Claudel Pétrin-Desrosiers (Association québécoise des médecins pour l'environnement), Dr. Marie-Jo Ouimet (Institut de santé publique du Québec) and Dr. Caroline Laberge (GMF-U Laurier). Call for Research Participants – Social Work for Land Back: Environmental Social Work, Decolonization, Reconciliation, and Indigenous Self-Determination. This MSW Thesis project involves a virtual sharing circle, and a 1-hour conversation. There is still time to register for Taking Action on Planetary Health, a digital certificate program running from February 17 - June 23, 2023. Sessions will cover key planetary health concepts and frameworks, opportunities for intervention and ethics, and much more.
