Ahoy hoy!
We kicked off 2023 with the inaugural Ocean Exploration Day on January 23 in honor of the first dive to Challenger Deep, the deepest point of the world's oceans, in 1960.
To celebrate, I had the honor of hosting a conversation with deep-sea explorers Dr. Don Walsh and Dr. Dawn Wright about their experiences in Challenger Deep and their thoughts on the past and future of ocean exploration. Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard conducted that first dive in 1960, and in July of 2022, Dawn Wright became the first Black person of any nationality or gender to dive to Challenger Deep.
In addition, the Inter-American Development Bank held the Deep-Sea Capacity in Latin America and the Caribbean event, hosted by Rafael Anta, to discuss the implications of deep-sea capacity for the Blue Economy with panelists Dr. Maud Quinzin, Sergio Cambronero-Solano, and Dr. Elva Escobar Briones.
We also saw many wonderful stories about ocean exploration across social media, reaching over 1 million people. Many thanks to all of you who were able to attend these events and participate in celebrating ocean exploration!
