Welcome to the 4th edition of AOE Engage!

This is one of my favorite times of the year in academic medicine. We are sending one group of medical students, residents, and fellows off into the world to start their next adventure. This is bittersweet as we are sad to see them go but so proud of how much they have grown.

Simultaneously we are excited to welcome our new learners and junior faculty. The landscape was so different this past year due to the pandemic. We recruited most of these new learners virtually, and for some this may be their first time to beautiful Chapel Hill. The AOE also welcomed a new group of faculty and resident members! We are hopeful that we will be able to gather in person this coming year to meet all these new community members and to continue our educational mission for the UNC School of Medicine.

Evening of Bandwidth

Highlights from the first virtual Alan W. Cross Evening of Scholarship
“The Evening of Scholarship is one of the highlights of the AOE year and was sorely missed last year. It returned this year—new and improved!  Although I missed the opportunity to mingle and network with the AOE members, there were definitely some bonuses to holding the event virtually. One of which was the comments, cheering, and dialogue in the chat box. Perhaps that is the “COVID” style of mingling.

Although I cannot say definitively, it seemed like there were more people online than would have attended in person. Those members that might have missed due to childcare issues, work obligations, and geographical barriers were more likely to join for at least a portion of this year’s celebration. And one component that COVID did not affect was the teaching awards.  Each year I am so impressed to see the amazing group of educators we have here at UNC!”

Dr. Pascarella grew up in Italy and received his Diploma of Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Naples (yes Italy, not Florida!).  He then (continue reading)

"The [AOE Educational Scholarship Consultative Service] was SUPER beneficial as it gave me a sounding board for my ideas but then also enabled me to transform those ideas into actionable steps toward an academic product. As a result, I was able to present the work at multiple national conferences including the annual PAS meeting.
