Welcome to the Streatham & Marlborough Sweep (SMS), a regular update of club news.

Club Hosts Successful Open Evenings

We hosted two successful open evening for girls & women’s cricket over the past couple of weeks. Approximately 25 potential new players enjoyed their first taste of cricket with an equal split between junior and senior cricketers. I'm sure we only reached a fraction of the potential players out there which goes to show how many would like to take up this wonderful game.

Big thanks to the organisers, Tanya Wanless, Liz Marin-Curtoud, Dan Forman and David Cook as well as Surrey's Beth Kerins who assisted with the coaching.

Junior Section Grows Beyond 250

The junior section has grown from just shy of 200 last year to an impressive 250+ this time around. A phenomenal achievement by Dan Forman and David Cook who lead the section, as well as our army of volunteers and coaching staff.

The juniors are are starting to make an impact in senior cricket too with Izzy Marin-Curtoud (U16) performing brilliantly for the Women’s side and Will Kay (U15) winning senior player of the week.

Hawks Win Thriller Whilst Men’s 3s Find Their Groove

The Hawks held their nerve on Sunday to overcome a
spirited South Nutfield Maverchicks. Having posted 106-4 from their 16, mainly thanks to an unbeaten 40 from Quade, the Maverchicks maintained pace with the required rate. They were, however, losing wickets and only had one set batter left on entering the final over. Kent bowled and managed to defend the seven remaining runs despite some scrambled singles. A close game which came down to the last ball, the Hawks once again showed composure fitting with their table topping status to secure victory.
The Men’s 3s smashed their way to 323-4 with Paul (111) leading the way with a rapid century at the top of the order. His wicket brought no respite as Williamson returned to form with a quick 73. With runs on the board, Hampton Wick were put on the back foot by a tight opening spell. Then, one of the finest sights in cricket, a young leg spinner ripping the ball past the edge time and time again. Will Kay (10.4-2-26-5) bowled beautifully to claim his second senior five-for (including the classic bowled-round-the-legs) as Hampton were dismissed for 82. There’s much more to come from this young man.  The Men’s 4 also won, again, with a comfortably victory against Spencer.
