The GLBC Gazette provides biweekly updates of what is happening at the State Capitol.
MAY 3, 2021
FROM OUR CHAIR
It has been over a month since the Georgia General Assembly adjourned on March 31st at midnight. To date, the Governor has signed 27 bills into law. He has also made 62 appointments to various state boards and commissions. I share this to let you know the business of government does not end after the legislature disbands. We need to remain vigilant in monitoring what laws are signed into law, are vetoed, and who will be responsible for their implementation.
Also, last week the U.S. Census released some initial data showing Georgia's population grew by one million people since 2010. We will not pick up a new congressional seat, but it does impact how the Georgia state legislature will redraw congressional, state, and county legislative districts. We should receive the redistricting data from the U.S. Census by September 30th. Afterwards, a special two-week session will be called to determine what the legislative map will look like for the next ten years.
As a member of the Senate Reapportionment and Redistricting committee, I recognize how important this process is and the implications it has for our state.
During the course of the summer the GLBC will provide additional information to ensure you are well versed on the subject and are aware of what rights you have to fair and equitable representation.
