FROM OUR CHAIR
Last week, members of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) executive committee, including Representative Jasmine Clark, Representative Shelly Hutchinson, Representative Dar’shun Kendrick, and myself visited the New York Stock Exchange to participate in high-level meetings with finance executives to discuss policies and programs capable of supporting Black wealth attainment.
A key legislative priority for the Caucus is Protecting the Workforce and Strengthening the Middle Class, especially as it pertains to ending intergenerational poverty, increasing homeownership, expanding access to capital, promoting small business development, and further developing the soft infrastructure needed to allow people to reenter the workforce.
It was a substantive and timely conversation. The pandemic revealed systemic inequities in financial services, small business development, and supporting Black entrepreneurship. But it has forced leaders to think critically and strategically on how to substantively address these issues. The Caucus is committed to working with companies and organizations that recognize our economy is strongest when all Americans have an equitable stake in it.
For the New York Stock Exchange, it was an opportunity to learn more about the realities facing many Blacks and other communities of color in Georgia who face barriers towards achieving their American Dream. Case in point, in 2019 the median wealth of Black households was $24,100. For whites, it is $189,000. (Center for American Progress)
The GLBC intends on continuing the conversation and identifying opportunities to partner with the New York Stock Exchange on behalf of our constituents who reside across the state.

Senator Tonya P. Anderson
