Christie and Duane Zizis and Their Dog Bruno
My heart belonged to a wonderful mutt named Bonz for 14 amazing years until he crossed the rainbow bridge last March. The heartache was so great, I didn’t know if I would ever be able bring myself love another dog. It wasn’t until months later that I was longing to bring a new family member home. But where to start? My kids are now teenagers, so I knew I wanted a big dog this time and I read a lot about Great Pyrenees. I looked on rescue sites, breeders, social media and on internet sites. But nothing seemed to work for us until one day we found a good old fashioned print ad in the local newspaper from a nice couple from Elizabeth, Pa. I thought this was fate because we found our prior dog the same way. They were not breeders. They just wanted to have one litter of puppies before they spayed their dog. We met at the Rostraver Airport where they brought all their puppies for us to meet, and this is where we fell in love with a 20 lb. male, we named Bruno. Bruno is now our giant 95 lb. 8-month-old Great Pyrenees puppy who believes he is a lap dog. The GP is a mountain dog, bred to guard livestock from predators like coyotes and bears. A male GP can weigh between 125-160 lbs. and stand 32 in tall and will grow for two years. They have an extra set of claws called dewclaws on their hind legs to help in climbing. They are known to be a highly intelligent breed and very independent which makes them also very hard to train. They are very good with children and make a loving family pet. However, because of their difficulty to train a lot of them end up in shelters or rescues because they take a lot of patience. They also use their paws a lot to get your attention- which is termed Pyrs Paw (GP paws are huge). My Bruno loves his toys, walks, mischief, the couch and just loves to be anywhere we are. He also loves to
chew!! He is a lovable fluffy fun giant!
