Grand Opening of Sanitas Medical Center

On May 9, FAU College of Nursing joined the Sanitas Medical Center in Lake Worth to celebrate its grand opening. Sanitas Medical Centers are a joint venture with GuideWell Mutual Holding Company, the parent company of Florida Blue. This facility is part of a new generation of medical centers designed to integrate traditional healthcare services with social and community support to create purposeful comprehensive care and improve outcomes for people in the local community. Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing advisory board member, Beth Johnston, helped to lead this initiative.

Caring Hearts Auxiliary Announces New Board Members

FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center recently welcomed Patricia Liehr, Ph.D., and Debi Feiler as new board members of the Caring Hearts Auxiliary. The board supports, promotes and raises funds for the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center programs and Day Center Scholarships.

“The board will benefit from Patricia and Debi’s impressive background and experience as we expand our outreach to members of the community and pursue new initiatives,” said Terry Fedele, chair, Caring Hearts Auxiliary board. “They will support our ongoing efforts to meet the complex needs of individuals with memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease with care and compassion.” Read More

On May 1, the Sigma Iota Xi at-Large Chapter inducted 40 new members into the prestigious Sigma International Honor Society of Nursing during an online ceremony.
College of Nursing student Erin Porter (shown second from right) attended the Nursing Consortium of Florida's educational conference on May 20 as our College's student ambassador. She met with nursing leaders and recruiters from a variety of healthcare systems, as well as other South Florida nursing students. Dr. Raquel Brown also represented the College at the event.

The College hosted the virtual Anne Boykin Institute Summer Academy, "Re-imagining Nursing Education Through Caring Science," on June 1 and 2. The goal of the summer academy is to advance caring science through reflective dialogues.
So wonderful to see some of our PTBSN students at the South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association's annual healthcare conference in Davie on May 25.
FAU team members attended the 16th annual Boca Helping Hands Monopoly Event and Casino Night on May 21.The College of Nursing was an event sponsor.
Drs. Armiel Suriaga and David Newman participated in the Cannabis Clinical Outcomes Research Conference in Orlando on May 19 and 20. Dr. Suriaga presented, "The Co-presence of Opioids in Cannabinoid-related Mortality During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Florida," and Dr. Newman presented "Efficacy and Safety of Older Adults With Chronic Pain Using Medical Marijuana" that he co-authored with Dr. Lenny Chiang-Hanisko.
On May 12, the Florida Nurses Association Southeast Region hosted a Nurses' Week Appreciation event on the Boca Raton campus. This spring, the College's strategic project teams drafted proposals for projects to launch this year and next to enhance the College's work in expansion planning, community engagement, building a robust research enterprise, creating a culture of inclusive excellence, developing an alumni network and more. The teams will reconvene in the fall to assess the next steps. Learn about the process in the College's Strategic Plan.

Congratulations to Drs. Kyndall Mammah, Raquel Brown and Joy Longo on recently receiving their Certification for Nurse Educators certificates! This important designation comes from the National League for Nursing and reflects that the highest standards of teaching are being met and is a mark of distinction for these faculty.
Best wishes to Louisa Kelly on her new position as Assistant Vice President and University Controller! Thank you for all of your hard work and your six and half years of service to the College of Nursing. 
Congratulations to Dr. Katherine Chadwell on her new position as the College's Interim Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs! Dr. Chadwell is an Associate Professor-Practice Teaching Track and will continue as Co-Coordinator of the Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner MSN concentration along with Dr. Debra Hain. Dr. Chadwell joined the College in 2013.

A study by FAU researchers, co-authored by Dr. Joy Longo, explored the influence of perceptions of COVID-19 on prevention practices early in the pandemic in 719 members of a public social-media focused group. (Journal of Community Health) (FAU News Desk story)
Assistant Professor Dr. Michelle Ferguson contributed to a May HealthDay article regarding a study that showed how breastfeeding may boost a child's brainpower. 
Congratulations to alumna Kyra Mendez, BSN '14, on her recent graduation from Johns Hopkins University with her Master of Public Health degree! Mendez also received her Ph.D. in Nursing from Johns Hopkins in May 2021. Currently, she is a post-doctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute. Read More
