Bat Week & Bats Out of the Darkness Wrap Up

The final week of October, Bat Week was a busy time for BEEPS.  We still welcomed visitors to the Bats Out of the Darkness exhibit at the Peachland Little Schoolhouse (PLS).  Groups of students, guides & scouts followed the Mystery Lane Trail Walk, a component of the educational tour, including this group of Peachland Scouts, who made the spooky walk after dark. If you missed Bats Out of the Darkness this summer and fall, click here for a quick recap.

Children decorated pumpkins, later displayed at the Jack-o-Lantern Walk on the Haunted Dock. A big shout out to Granny's Fruit Stand in Summerland for donating the pumpkins.  We are very grateful. A great time was had by all. Below is Pumpkin decorator Owen Lange with his contest-winning creation outside the PLS. The very popular Tie-dyed T-shirt events wrapped up for the season also, with some really far-out and groovy masterpieces created by enthusiastic participants.  Below right.

Late each autumn, once all the bats moved out, members of the Peachland Fire Department kindly volunteer to help BEEPS to access the attic of the Peachland Historic School on Beach Avenue to inspect the habitat and electronics while we download data from monitoring equipment. Deceased bat specimens are collected for examination to determine the cause of death, with results included in a new bat mortality study.  At this time the guano littering the floor is also cleaned up and collected for research purposes and for use as a soil amender. This year's cleanout took place on November 29th, with BEEPS volunteers,  Peachland Firefighters and bat biologists working together to get the job done.  The research helps to determine the general health of the colony at large, and individual; bats. We are eager to find out if this summer's record high temperatures may have played a part in the number of casualties that occurred.
In conjunction with the Peachland Community Arts Council, local artist and staunch BEEPS supporter, Wayne Power will teach a 4-week painting class at the Peachland Little Schoolhouse, on Mondays from 1-4PM, starting January 10..
