The 16@95 Improvement Projects are
Lighting the Way
For years, community leaders across Chatham County have been discussing the need for lights at the I-16/I-95 Interchange. The time has finally come! Safety is an important goal of the 16@95 Improvement Projects and the new state-of-the-art LED lighting is this month’s highlighted feature of the projects.
The Interchanges
The new partial-turbine interchange at I-95 and I-16 will include LED lighting to improve visibility and safety for nighttime travelers. Installation of the bases for the lights began in September 2021. The poles and fixtures will be installed as construction progresses. The lights will be operational around the time of the projects’ substantial completion due to the phasing and the need to have most of the system in place to energize the system. 
The new interstate lights feature a sleek design with crisp LED lighting. 
243 light poles will be placed throughout the I-16/I-95 Interchange. Each overhead light fixture features a LED module with 64 to 80 high-performance LEDs. These sleek LED lights last longer, are more energy efficient, and produce a better-quality light than conventional, interstate, high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights, providing a better driving experience at a lower cost. The light poles will range from approximately 30’ to 45’ in height. The mast arm supports a directional head to focus light onto the interstate travel lanes and away from adjacent developments. With improvements in technology, the new LED lights have exceptional capabilities to pinpoint the direction of light, so motorists can have improved visibility precisely where it is needed. Wall mounted LED lights will be mounted onto the bridge piers to improve visibility under the I-16/I-95 Interchange bridges.
Existing lights at the I-16/I-516 Interchange will be upgraded with new LED lighting to enhance visibility and safety. Existing poles that are impacted by work on the interstate will be removed and replaced with new poles and luminaries. Existing poles that are not impacted will remain.

       to the 16@95 Improvement Projects!

Community Engagements
The 16@95 Improvement Projects team participated as guest speakers for the Savannah Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) meeting held on October 6, 2021, at The Pirate’s House in Savannah, Georgia. The meeting provided information about the benefits of the projects, the new interchange design, and the I-16 widening. A question-and-answer session followed the presentation, providing an opportunity for engaging dialogue.
