The Link Newsletter March 2020
Registration: Public Benefit Organisation

With the outbreak of Covid-19 and the announcement of the lockdown, all Link training and teaching sessions have been suspended for the time being. We encourage everyone to do their bit to contain the spread of the virus by minimizing contact. We wish you and your families well during this difficult time and look forward to making up the time the children have lost when the situation normalizes.

A New Record!

What an amazing start to the year.  We had a record number of new volunteers attend both the literacy and numeracy training in February.  It is so encouraging to see so many people who are willing to invest time in making a difference to the future of children who so desperately need the foundation literacy and numeracy skills to succeed in their school careers.

New Appointments!

With The Link family now having grown to 20 literacy and 7 numeracy centres, we have decided to appoint co-ordinators to focus on specific areas.  With this in place, we can continue to grow our potential to reach children in need, whilst still maintaining a professional and effective support infrastructure.   We are fortunate to have volunteers come forward to work with our existing programme co-ordinator and wish them all the best in their new portfolios.

If anyone would like to order a shirt, please contact  your centre manager or e-mail us at   We have both men’s and women’s sizes at a cost of R130 each.
Pictured wearing the newly launched Link shirts (from left to right) are Jeanette Dingle – Numeracy Co-ordinator, Joan Donet – Administrative Co-ordinator, Nicolle Allison – Marketing Co-ordinator,  Margaret Bennetts – Financial Administrator and  Megan Maynard – Co-ordinator.

New Resource

So many of the children who join The Link programme start out at the pre-reading level.  A lot of the children are very low in confidence and believe they can’t learn to read.  Robynne Abrahams, Megan Maynard and Judith Campbell collaborated to develop and produce this wonderful new resource to address the gap between children’s phonics knowledge and first readers.  It consists of four books that are colour coded to correspond to The Link sound cards.

New Centres

We are so pleased to announce the opening of new centres at Eastgate and Risidale.  We look forward to continuing to reach more children during the course of the year.

Numeracy has started with a flourish at our 7 centres.  It is encouraging to see how committed and enthusiastic our numeracy managers are, and in time we hope to open more numeracy centres at all existing Link literacy centres. Pictured below are two of our children from HA Jack playing a new game developed by one of our volunteers.  How rewarding to watch children learning through play!

Results Graphs

Once again, we are so proud of the results achieved by our children and volunteers.  The graphs below illustrate the percentage improvements of children participating in The Link Literacy (on the left) and Numeracy (on the right) programmes last year.
We once again hosted our 5 year long-service tea at the spectacular Beechwood Gardens.  Thank you to all our amazing, dedicated volunteers and a special congratulations to Vicki Graves (pictured above left with trustee Dudu Magagula). Vicki celebrated 10 years of service.  She started off with The Link at Salvazione when it began in 2010 and ended up as Centre Manager at Yeoville.

Exciting New Fundraising Platform

The Link has partnered with Given Gain,  an internationally recognised fundraising platform.  We are now represented as a charity on the platform and this will allow supporters to donate easily from anywhere in the world.  It also gives people the opportunity to set up their own fundraising campaigns with The Link as a beneficiary.  This is very easy to do and can be anything from a once off donation, to donations in lieu of birthday gifts, to support/ sponsorship for competing in a sporting event. Please support us by listing us as a beneficiary for the MySchool Card scheme. There can be more than one beneficiary linked to a card. For more information, please visit the My School card website.
