Wickford violinist set for Essex Young Musician of the Year competition

Violinist Caroline Penn will be among the 15 musicians competing for the title Essex Young Musician of the Year on Sunday, July 7.
Caroline, from Wickford - who has been playing the violin for 13 years - has given several public performances in the last three years.
The former Chelmsford County High School for Girls student will be performing the first movement of Beethoven's Spring Sonata and Danse Espagnole by Manuel de Falla in the first round of the competition at the Budworth Hall, High Street, Ongar.
As well as playing the violin, Caroline has achieved Grade 8 on the piano and Grade 6 Singing.
Caroline, who hopes to become a composer and continue with her performing, is looking forward to the Essex Young Musician of the Year competition.
She said: "It's a great opportunity to compete with like-minded musicians."
Audience admission on July 7 costs £10 per ticket.
The first round commences at 11.45am and is open to the public, and the public final will take the form of a concert which will commence at 6.30pm.
Ongar Music Club's distinguished patron, pianist John Lill, will be the chairman of the adjudicators at the final.
Ongar Music Club chairman Jane Webster said: "We are delighted with the number of young people who have contacted us this year and look forward to a super day of music-making from the competitors.
"Audience members are welcome to come and go during the day, and their all-day £10 ticket admits them to the final in the evening too."
