Bear with me as I try a new format of update in which I include creativity-related tidbits that I think you might like, beyond just my own writing updates (although those are in here too!).
Two books I recently finished and loved (links take you to my reviews):
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows: A story dealing with WWII that manages to be whimsical and charming and not TOO harrowing, thank goodness. I want to see the film version next! I've heard it's lovely too.
Wicked by Gregory Maguire: As an Oz fan since childhood, I had to give this a try, and I found it delightfully weird in rather the same way as L. Frank Baum's original books (I like weird). As for the musical, I'm told it's VERY different from the book, but I might try listening to it anyway.
Currently reading and so far loving: A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, in which there are three (or four?) different versions of London, each with various levels of magic and danger, and only a few magically talented travelers can move between them. Don't tell me any spoilers, I'm only 100 pages in! But I am hooked.
Do you like David Tennant's Scottish voice as much as I do? Do you like hearing about the lives of actors (and sometimes politicians) as much as I do also? Did you know that David Tennant has a podcast where he interviews such people? I'm really enjoying it so far. He is humble and funny and a good listener when his guests talk.
Can you believe it's been 10 years since my first* novel, The Ghost Downstairs, was released? Amazon currently has a smokin' deal on that book in paperback, if you'd like a hard copy.
*Not at all the first novel I ever wrote, but the first published in print.
And All the Better Part of Me is off to a bright future (we hope!), because it is headed to this year's BookExpo/BookCon in New York City--and I will be there too! My publisher will be presenting it in a "YA and New Adult" session to entice book buyers, and I'll sign copies. Tell me your must-see/must-do ideas for a book-loving introvert with a few days in NYC!
Meanwhile, the advance print copies of All the Better Part of Me have arrived, which is always an exciting day. (These are the ones for early reviewers. It releases to the rest of the world on Sep. 1.)
The book has begun getting its earliest reviews on Goodreads, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them as the season progresses. Thank you so much to the many bloggers and authors who have agreed to be advance reviewers.
Send me your creative thoughts and updates if you are so inclined. Wishing you a productive season!
